Things aren’t always what they seem.
Special agent, Max Prince, and his boyfriend, Dr. Leo Reeves, are back to work after their first case together. When a prominent Department of Defense scientist kills himself in a mysterious way, their entire FBI team is tasked to figure out if the weapon he was working on was somehow the cause of his death. Things get even more interesting when SAC Lincoln Snow calls in old friends to help. Damon Thorne, formerly of the CIA, and Jarrett and Thayne from the ATF step up to help on the premise that their case might have a link to biological terrorism.
But it’s so much worse.
Seventy years ago, the CIA began an illegal human experimentation program, code named MK-ULTRA, and the more Leo and Max learn about what Dr. Cummings has been doing for the DOD, the closer they draw parallels to the defunct program. These experiments aren’t the only things the government scientist has been working on. When Jarrett and Thayne go exploring at his house, they discover a secret room which promises to reveal the true nature of what’s happening…and it’s worse than they could’ve imagined.
Evil always targets the most vulnerable.
Just when they think they’ve figured out what’s going on, an old nemesis from the FBI steps in with instructions to shut it all down and take over. All Max knows is, the sudden appearance of a guy their whole team hates, can’t be good, especially when he starts throwing his weight around. Something else is going on here and a cover up is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. To top it all off, an embarrassing ex, an accidental poisoning, multiple break-ins, and a couple of bad guys acting like ninjas, add to the utter chaos of this case which promises to be stranger than life on Mars. After all—
Truth is stranger than fiction.
REVIEW:
Boy oh boy are you in for a doozy with this one. Patty has pulled in almost everyone I adore to make this one happen.
Leo and Max are finally starting to recover from all that went on down south. They are under orders to meet with therapists and get through the gruesomeness they went through. When FBI SAC Lincoln Snow brings in the team something big is up. And having DOD agents and a retired CIA biggie attending their meeting on an apparent suicide is out of the norm. Bring in AFT SAC Sarah Connor, Linc’s wife, and two of her top agents Thayne and Jarrett, also means something big is happening. When a top secret DOD scientist takes a swan dive off the 69th floor of the US Bank building it’s all hands on deck trying to figure out why. But diving into this case leads to so many risks that no one saw coming.
Seriously, I know to expect one of our agents to have something happen to them when Patty is writing but this went to EPIC portions! I was almost afraid to turn the page a couple times. This is action packed from start to finish. And I realize that this was written before most of this new political intrigue is currently happening in our country but there are some strong parallels that make me question what’s really going on when I read this book. I know for a fact that Ms. Logan researches and researches and then double checks her facts again when writing and I tend to trust her more than most news broadcasts. I, unfortunately, could easily see all this book happening and the government covering it up. It makes me as feed up as Linc’s and Sarah’s teams that it won’t see the “light of day for our supposed own good”.
I really enjoyed having Thayne and Jarrett join in on this one. I have truly missed them. If you have read any of my past reviews from their Death and Destruction series you know that I love both those men so much and look forward to all of Jarrett’s antics. He is the comic relief that is necessary to be able to survive the heaviness that working for the alphabet teams need at times. It was nice to catch up with Mark (Jarrett’s daddy) and his wife Dot, Thayne’s mom, too. And I’ve missed Sarah too.
I enjoyed getting to watch Leo and Max as they are solidifying their relationship and knowing that the other is the only man for them. The love that is growing makes me so happy that they found each other. They really are a perfect match.
Ms. Logan is known for her fast paced, gritty novels of the men and women that put their lives on the line daily in order to keep us protected and safe. I look forward to my visits with all the members of Lincoln’s hand picked team in the LA FBI office and visits from the LAPD and AFT too. This book will grab hold of you right from the start and you won’t be able to put it down! It’s that fascinating and well written. A huge thumbs up for me 👍
