“Now this is for you, darling. Happy birthday,” said Grandma with a smile. What was it? The box was long, about the same size as the distance between my wrist and elbow, and was covered in a fine inky green velvet flock. The box alone looked expensive.
“Can we afford this?” I found myself asking, mesmerised by the box
“Darling, this is a family heirloom so yes we can afford it.”
“A ‘family heirloom’?”
“Yes, darling, it was your mother’s.” My mother’s… my hands shook as I began to open the box lid. Inside, on what looked like a checkered silk cushion was a long rod, almost the full length of the box. It was a soft white hue with swirls and symbol like letters engraved all along the crystal-like surface. It must have been expensive.
“What is it?” I asked Grandma.
“This is… was your mother’s spellcaster’s wand. It is now yours.”
Spellcaster’s wand? My mother’s? I went to pull out the wand but Grandma hurriedly closed the lid.
“Darling, use your brain, will you please? Not out here where people can see. Wait till you’re aboard the ship at least.” Oh right, secrecy and all that.
“How?” I said simply.
“It was retrieved after… after her passing.”
“Oh.”
