Just thinking about the impending shitstorm of danger surrounding my mate makes me feel edgy and prickly all over. I wipe at my forehead and my hand comes away damp with sweat. I stare as a faint tremor goes through my fingers.
“Fuck,” I whisper.
The telltale symptoms of the Mating Fever descend on me with speed and ferocity. The intensity of it is so much I nearly double over in shock. My gut cramps and my tentacles writhe, tender and swollen, each one yearning for River.
The overly exuberant fan finally slinks off in mild embarrassment but with an obvious look of happiness on his face while clutching his notebook to his chest. As he departs, River turns his attention back to me.
With one glance, he realizes my predicament. He’s gotten very good at deciphering the clues over the last few weeks.
He steps into my arms and holds me in a reassuring embrace as he turns his head and whispers quietly in my ear. “It’s the Mating Fever again, isn’t it?”
I nod and sag against him in relief. “Yes.”
“How bad is it?”
I give a slightly hysterical laugh. “Pretty bad. It came on me fast. Faster than usual.”
“I’m sorry, babe.”
I shake my head. “Not your fault.”
River darts a glance toward the door. “Do we have time to get home?”
I’m panting now, a hazy fog of lust and yearning swamping me with need. “I don’t think so. Not sure I’ll make it that long.” I hate the way the Mating Fever makes me so out of control and vulnerable in a way I’ve never been before in my life. My body feels like it is rebelling against me.
But River is calm, and so accepting of it all. Even better yet, he takes control of the situation. He gives me a soft look of silent understanding as he holds my hand, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them tenderly. The very sensation is glorious against my hyper-sensitized skin, and I shiver with delight.
“Come on,” he murmurs in that sultry voice of his that never ceases to get me hard, even when I’m not in the midst of a Mating Fever. “Let’s go get our freak on in your SUV.”
For a moment I balk. “W-what?”
He arches an eyebrow at me. “Never done it in the backseat of a car before?”
I flush. “I…that is…no,” I admit.
River’s expression turns gleeful. “Ooh, new sexual adventure! I get to induct you into the ways of vehicular nookie.”
Then, to my mortification, he turns to Chewy and says, “I need to go get busy with Kai in the back of his SUV. You think you can keep watch over the parking lot and make sure everything’s okay while we’re otherwise engaged?”
Chewy lets out a deeply put-upon sigh. “Sure, kid. When you work for royalty, you get used to having to keep an eye out for them when they’re busy between the sheets. ‘Course I’m used to slightly classier assignations in comfortable bedrooms, but to each his own.”
I groan. Thankfully, the Mating Fever is strong enough that it wipes away any feelings of personal humiliation that would otherwise overwhelm me at a moment like this.
