It all started when I told some friends I was looking for a job. In the small town where I live there weren’t many openings. Plus, being gay didn’t help in a little community. Most people were never mean to me or anything, but I think the business owners were afraid people would think they were gay if they hired me. I didn’t have a lot of gay friends there either.

Jake and I weren’t really close in school, mainly because of the age difference, so I didn’t have his number. She gave it to me and I called him the minute we hung up.
“Hey, Jon!” he said when I called. “How have you been? Long time, no see. You know I used to think you were cute as hell in school.”
“I had no idea,” I said. “You never really said anything to me unless your sister was around.”
“Sorry ‘bout that. It was the stupid social thing of high school. I’m glad I’m out of that mess.”
“Me, too,” I said. “Your sister said you might know where I can get a decent job.”
“More than decent, man. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven.”
“I didn’t know there was such a thing as a job like that.”
