I love reading mystery and suspense fiction, but most of what I read – and write – in that genre is mixed in with others such as historical or paranormal/supernatural, which go particularly well together.
There are different ways the mix of mystery/suspense and paranormal/supernatural can be written, and I’m a fan of both.
One approach is that the MC discovers there are paranormals/supernaturals living alongside them and have been for some time. That then leads into the suspense part of the story especially if the supernaturals don’t want to be discovered. What lengths will someone go to in order to keep friends and family safe? Humanity does have a reputation for mistreating and discriminating against anyone different to themselves. Or seeing a potential to weaponise them.
On of the flip side, the other paranormal mystery/suspense I enjoy writing and reading is having the detective as the supernatural/paranormal. Vampires and werewolves make great detectives as they not only have an edge with their extra abilities but often a much longer lifespan and experience to draw on. People with psi powers also have a little extra to help out their investigations. What if the detective is a telepath or empath? Attempting to lie when questioned wouldn’t be a great idea…
Supernatural detectives feature in The Sleepless City series I wrote with Elizabeth Noble. In that series a group of vampires, a werewolf, a ghost, and a human work together to solve supernatural crime.
In my spin off series Pōneke Shadows, two of the characters from The Sleepless City relocate to New Zealand, and form a new team. Their first case hits a little too close to home.
