Talk about writer retreats, why to use them and where to find them
Retreats are times when writers go off by themselves to meet with other writers in a supportive, nurturing atmosphere. The purpose is to stimulate ideas and give busy people a chance to write in a quiet place. I have gone on a number of retreats. Most of them were through my local writers’ group. We’d get out of town, have a weekend of quiet time to write, maybe discuss ideas with other writers, and basically get away. It was amazingly productive and I’d usually get a quarter of a book written.
Finding retreats of this type is usually difficult because they aren’t advertised. They are brought about within a group that already exists. My advice would be to join a local group in your area, get involved and if they have a retreat, go. Move your schedule, do what you have to, but go. Not only will you get a lot done, but you’ll make friends that have the potential to last a very long time.
