A year ago, Carter Lawrence infiltrated the infamous Bad Co. nightclub as an undercover officer. Now, with the investigation over, he can’t resist the call of an unfamiliar thrill: dominance and submission.
It was supposed to be a one-time visit to satisfy his fascination. However, after coming to the rescue of club regular, Lucas, it might be harder than Carter thought to walk away.
REVIEW:
After reading Bad Crowd, the book from which this is a spin-off, I was happy to see that there would be a second book. It’s only a short story, yet it shows more depth to the already curious Carter, a character we barely knew as Carter in the first book.
With only 60 pages, you can’t really expect a lot of depth of character development. The story’s main goal was to show Carter’s first proper, not-undercover contact with BDSM. Of course, this has to be done at the club centred in the first book, Bad Co., which gave way for a welcome nod at the former main characters. It was great that, even in a simple brief comment, the reader got a glimpse of how Mal and Gideon were doing now.
Those two are not what the story was about, though. It was entirely about Carter and his experience. I am a bit sad that the story was so short, only a peek into Carter’s first experience and his hopefully growing connection with Lucas, this could’ve been turned into a whole bigger story. I do get why though, the main storyline is over, lengthening this story would have seemed forced. But I can’t help but want more of those two.
I loved all the police references in Carter’s thoughts. It shows that despite everything, he’s a cop through and through, which was quite helpful for his first interaction with BDSM, and it provided some humour to the story, which helped with the constant tension Carter’s state of curious uncertainty brought the story.
All in all, the story was fun to read, showing a different side of Carter, to properly meet the kind of man he is, instead of the facade we have seen in the first book. I just wished the story was a bit longer, with a bit more depth, and also properly meeting Lucas.
