“Clear your mind,” Healer commanded, his eyes closing as he took a long deep breath. “Feel it.” Feel what? The cold wind that was freezing Húlí’s neck? The hardness of the dirt beneath him? What was he supposed to be feeling? “I don’t feel anything,” he complained. Xiăo Ying opened his eyes and scowled. “Close your eyes. Open your mind,” he said. When Fox had no reaction, he reached over and grabbed Húlí’s hands in his, squeezing them. “Close your freaking eyes, Ming Xin,” he snapped. As soon as he did, Húlí felt it—a wave of cold heat emitting from the ground right into his body. As the energy traveled through him, he got stronger. He was not sure how he knew this, but every muscle in his body felt renewed. If he had to describe the sensation to anyone, he would say he felt as if he were shimmering. He was so surprised by it that he dropped the other man’s hands and opened his eyes. “Holy fuck!” he exclaimed. “What the hell was that?” Xiăo Ying’s lips curved into a tiny, almost invisible, smile. “That was the earth’s energy recharging you.” “Bù kěnéng. Impossible.” He had never heard of anything like that. “Our master must have told you about it at some point,” Xiăo Ying said. “All living creatures, humans and yāomó, get their life energy from the earth. It’s a question of learning how to harness it.” Húlí took a moment to think about it. “Are you saying I can use this energy to replenish my qi?” That would mean no more need for him to risk his life by seducing the wrong men. “Once you learn how to control it, yes.” Healer’s face had gone back to its icicle mask. “Right now, you felt it through me. You’re not trained enough to do it on your own yet.” A thought percolated in his mind. “Why didn’t the master ever teach me that?” “I’m guessing you weren’t ready,” Xiăo Ying said, brushing a long lock of hair behind his back. “The trick is to be able to clear your mind of thoughts, fears, and doubts and trust your nature implicitly in order to open up to Mother Earth.” It all sounded like a lot of nonsense—the kind of gibberish fortune tellers often spewed to their audience. But Húlí had felt it. Whatever that was, he had sensed the strength, the power of that energy. There was no denying it. Might as well surrender. He had nothing to lose. “So how do I learn it?” “You begin by trusting me,” Healer said simply. Well, that could be a problem. Húlí had not been raised to trust anyone. “Why should I bother learning this? After all, the seduction game can be a lot of fun.” And dangerous, not to mention degrading, at times. Xiăo Ying smiled then. An honest to gods open smile. “Well, you can always practice your seduction skills on me.” Húli couldn’t be sure but he could have sworn Healer was laughing as he walked away, leaving Fox behind in a fit of coughing.
