BLURB:
A brilliant inventor, Enzo Dragonbane has plenty to hide, including his secret identity as the recently deceased king’s bastard son. But he’s not half as mysterious as Cullen, the man he finds in the caverns. Cullen has no memories at all.
Cullen doesn’t know who he is or how he got there, and he certainly doesn’t know anything about his strange shadow powers. But he soon learns that memories or not, magic or not, the Ruby Kingdom stands on the brink of civil war. A lower-class group called the Ashen is poised to take advantage of the power vacuum caused by the king’s death to fight for equality.
Soon Enzo and Cullen find themselves in the midst of a revolution. As they untangle Cullen’s past, they discover they have much in common. But if they’re to have any hope of a peaceful life together, they’ll have to discover the secret of controlling Cullen’s abilities, take sides in the coming fight, and face up to the truth of who they really are.
REVIEW:
Prince Cullen of House Ametista, the Amethyst Prince, didn’t want the throne, back in those days.
In all his vulnerability, and grieving his father’s death, Prince Cullen got betrayed by people he thought of as friends.
Now he’s stuck in the caverns, until Enzo the inventor found him. He lost his memory and only knows his name is Cullen. The sweet dwarf Enzo takes him home.
They are more alike than they know. Later in the story, you’ll understand.
Enzo understands Cullen is full of power, Cullen only knows he’s a beast, and he’s afraid of his own power. Enzo’s faith in him is a step to start a process of healing.
“The memories hurt, Enzo. So much fear and pain and guilt. I… I think I must have done something awful. I think I deserve to have forgotten, to be forgotten—”
Fair Cullen and Handsome Enzo, what a couple. There’s a sweet and solid romance growing between them. They try to prevent a civil war, the King is dead, and there are forces who want to claim the throne.
To be honest, I lost the timeline a bit. While reading I tried to remember what happened to Cullen in the previous stories, and how long he was in the shadows, I was reading with one half and trying to remember about previous events with the other half of my brain, yes it hurt, lol.
There are a few plot lines, Cullen’s journey where he has to face his memories and finally remember and acknowledge who he really is, and Enzo’s journey where he also finally acknowledges who he is and has to be. There’s also their sweet romance and the story around the future of the Ruby Kingdom.
It was wonderful to meet all the characters from the Gemstone Kingdoms again.
The magic, and certainly Cullen’s shadow side was just amazing! Their romance was sweet.
The events were entertaining, just as the writing. The whole series piece by piece recommendation worthy!
