Elouise

After a public breakup with my fiancée, I’ve retrenched in Vancouver, British Columbia, to lick my wounds and star in a movie. I’m acting as if everything is okay, but then I meet a woman who sees the real me. Dare I take a chance to find real love?

Kelci

I’ve admired Elouise Hynes from afar for years. She’s recently come out of the closet and was dumped just a short time later. I want to offer comfort, but I’m a makeup artist on her movie crew. Can we really form a lasting bond when she lives in LA and I’m staying in Canada?

REVIEW:

The book was quite interesting from the start, following Elouise after her breakup, yet in the middle of shooting a new film in which she stars. Slowly, you become acquainted with the other characters in the book, all of whom have their own personality, but some with a more fleeting appearance than others. The characters, except for Rosa, are likeable and satisfyingly rounded. You get to read how the characters all know each other well already, how you as a reader end up in this already well-shaped world. It makes the storyline easy to follow and read.

On top of that, the fact that the book has a dual POV, both Elouise’s and Kelci’s, really helps to get into the minds of the characters and see what they are struggling with throughout the book. Sometimes the thoughts or additions seem to be a bit childish, but as you get to know the characters more, you realise that is just their own voice and as a reader, you appreciate the clear distinction in the voices of the characters. The author did a really good job with that, together with slowly introducing more of the characters’ backgrounds over time. It does not feel rushed at all, while the story itself is relatively short.

The storyline itself was a bit bland. It flowed naturally, the story was interesting and cosy, just as one would expect from a romance novel, and the characters slowly grew towards each other. It simply missed the wow factor. Yes, there were a couple of great surprises and the book was quite an easy and enjoyable read, but there was nothing that made me think twice about what I just read, nothing that made me overly happy or overly emotional. While the book did not grip me, it was definitely fun to read.
