Description
Ravi Abhiramnew’s job is simple: hunt down and neutralize supernatural threats. That is until he meets Cayenne, a charismatic time traveler who claims to know everything about him—even his most closely guarded secrets.
Going to dinner with Cayenne is probably a bad idea, and a romantic island getaway definitely is.
When a monster picks their resort as its hunting ground, Ravi’s combat skills and Cayenne’s time magic should make it a breeze to kill the monster and get their vacation back on track. But it turns out the real danger lurks much, much closer…

A few hours earlier, and one year in the future, Ravi’s wrapping up practice at the gun range when Harry’s group text comes through.
Hey team, I got us a job. Paying crazy well. We’re going to Chicago first thing in the morning to meet with the client. The brief says to wear warm clothes. Also, we can’t take pictures of the client, and Constance and her cat have to stay two yards away from the client at all times.
Constance eventually texts back.
What did’st I do to earn this ire?
Though first, she sends a series of random letters and symbols. Modern technology is likely always going to be tricky for her.
Harry sends back a shrug emoji.
So pack up your guns, swords, magic potions, or whatever the fuck. No idea what’s going to be waiting for us, let’s be ready for anything. New guy, you ready for this?
Nate’s text back is just a series of exclamation marks and cheering emojis. Val tersely chimes in with her confirmation; like Constance, she’s not much of a texter.
Ravi dials the secure line to his superior.
“Ravi,” his handler answers smoothly, and even though she can’t see if he is slouching or not, his spine straightens automatically at the sound of her gunpowder voice.
“Ma’am. McAllister got a lead on a job in Chicago.” She is not a fan of small talk. Better he jump straight to the matter at hand.
“Ah, yes. The network just delivered this potential issue to my desk five minutes ago. Someone on your end must be very well informed to get it before The Trust did. Interesting.” She sniffs, an expressive sound that manages to fully convey her displeasure.
Very interesting. The Trust’s network operates via a combination of intelligence agents, data mining, and seers, so they are usually extremely well-informed. “We’ve got no specifics on the threat. Any relevant details from the network?”
She breathes an irritated sigh. “None. Only that the event is to occur in Chicago, but there’s some confusion from the seers on when this is supposed to occur. It’s possible some lines have been crossed.”
It’s rare, but it happens. “I’ll keep my eyes open, ma’am.”
“Ravi,” she says, her voice lowering with what he knows is going to be some sort of chastisement. She always finds something. “Your reports have been light on details lately. Especially after the incident with the young somamancer. You convinced me that we shouldn’t recruit the young woman for a few years, despite my better judgment. She could easily become a danger to others.”
“Constance has been very successful in teaching Lucy to control her abilities.”
“The girl made blood monsters, agent.”
“By accident. Lucy is twelve—” he begins, but his handler’s voice goes cold and unassailable. He falls silent as she speaks over him.
“That is quite enough.”
He takes a slow breath. “Sorry, Aunt Padme.”
“I expect a certain standard from you, Ravi. You are not a common field agent. You’re an Abhiramnew. We’ve placed a great deal of faith in you to handle these independent contractors in whatever way you see best. See that we don’t have cause to regret that decision.”
Long practice keeps his voice calm as a stone. “Of course, ma’am.”
He can almost hear her firm nod of approval. “Very good. Maintain the appraisal on McAllister’s team. If they keep doing so well against these supernatural threats, we might be interested in offering them a full contract within the Atlanta branch. As always, if you find any useful artifacts, do be sure to retrieve them.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“And I expect your next report to be thorough.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She hangs up. His spine finally loosens.
Ravi checks the group text. A lot of crosstalk about when and how to use emojis, jokes and affection flying back and forth between the rest of the team. He considers this for a time before sending a simple, I’ll be there.

Prone to diving way too deep down research rabbit-holes and absolutely incapable of working without a curated playlist in the background, Fox Beckman lives in the Twin Cities and has far too many irons in the fire. Fox is writer, an artist, an occasional wrangler of kangaroos, a longsword fencer, an archer, a roller of dice, and a forager of mushrooms that aren’t deadly (probably).
