Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman’s gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.
Miles, Lord Arvon, is not impressed. But he’s faced with a tumbledown home and lost family fortune, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Toby—shameless, practical, and definitely desperate—may be just the man he needs.
To steal back a priceless bracelet, that is. What else were you thinking?
REVIEW:
Oh my! This was just a delightful and satisfying novella 🙂
Toby and Miles meet at a pub and after a mutually gratifying experience, Miles wakes to discover that Toby has robbed him of one of the few possessions he is actually attached too. Not an auspicious start.
Toby then is traveling from London in a coach with a man who is going to start a job with the Earl of Arvon in a remote village. He figures maybe he can find a position as well. However, the estate does not impress and worst of all? Who is the new Earl of Arvon? Miles, the man Toby has already met. Oops.
However, Miles is in a bit of a state. His father has apparently lost the family fortune, his estate is in a shambles, he can’t even afford to pay staff. Toby convinces him to let him help him try to set things to rights and try to figure out what happened while Miles was away and his father seemed to spiral. What could have happened? And who might have had a hand in the old Earl’s downfall?
This was a really fun enemies to lovers tale. Toby and Miles are opposites in so many ways. Yet they seem to fit together when they work together. It takes some time for them to be honest with each other, but they eventually get to where they need to be 🙂 The mystery was surprising and the suspense and danger added another element to this unlikely romance. In the end, despite their differences in class and experience, Miles and Toby are there for each other in every way.
A delightful historical and if you’re a fan already of K.J. Charles, you won’t want to miss this amusing and unlikely romance.
