REVIEW:
When dragon shifter Zander followed the Global Shifter Council’s instructions to mediate a family dispute, he didn’t expect to meet his fated mate. The magical Rayne valued his single status and was determined not to be constrained by a chemical reaction to a fated mate – that was until he met his fated mate, Zander.
Light My Fire is the first of a two-book series that, as the blurb says, ends with an HEA. The story has its conclusion, and only some characters continue to book two. It was a sweet tale I had high hopes for – unfortunately, it didn’t light my fire.
The story is told in the first-person present tense from the viewpoints of Rayne and Zander. Technically, I only found one slip into the third person while in an alternate view. Worldbuilding is detailed, down to the color of the toaster, and while I get that painting a picture is essential, I’d have preferred to forgo some detail for more action.
In the opening pages, I was treated to some super action, and amusing banter that left me drooling with anticipation of what was to come. But after that, my heartbeat hardly changed pace. Rayne has his doubts, but Zander is beyond understanding. Other than the odd blip that felt engineered rather than naturally understandable, Rayne and Zander seamlessly fit together. Cousins are filled with saintly advice – even the cat and dog get along. It was all very saccharine and safe.
There was potential for ups and downs while expanding on experiences. Adjusting life’s goals, job changes, and the home/work balance are tackled, but they were done amicably. There were conflicts outside of Rayne and Zander, but it was all dealt with quickly.
This story is perfect for those who like low angst tales with pockets of action and quick resolutions. So, I can see its appeal to some, hence the three hearts; sadly, it wasn’t for me.
