Fear can open doors we never dreamt possible.
Shaun Moseley is in a trap and it’ s all his brother, Liam’ s fault.
Living a normal life running a B&B in Blackpool, he finds himself right in the middle of a gang turf war in Manchester. Shaun is an alien in this horrifying new world of drugs, guns and violence.
Shaun rebels against everyone, isolating himself in the process. But a terrifying experience opens his eyes to gang member Enzo Ponti. Shaun may be trapped for the time being, but that doesn’ t mean he can’ t have a little fun along the way, right?
He dismissed Enzo as just another hired killer but when he scratches the surface, he finds much more there.
But evil gangster, Jonny Wellingham wants revenge on the gang and has set his sights on Shaun. Can he live long enough to find just how deep Enzo’ s waters are?
REVIEW:
Note: This is NOT a standalone. You need to have read the first book, Fool’s Gold in order to make sense of this one.
This story begins right where the first book left off. Shaun Moseley, Liam’s brother, has been pulled into the crime war that is brewing between Marco (Liam’s boyfriend) and Jonny Wellingham, the guy who has run Manchester for years that Liam was working for. After Liam has recovered and the whole lot has gone to ground in a rural farm setting, Marco’s cousins Enzo and Giovanni show up for protection while waiting for Uncle Z to arrive and take things over.
Immediately Shaun has a target on his back. Repeatedly he gets in over his head and is pursued by Jonny’s men in order to flush out Liam and Marco and make them pay. He’s bitter and surly about it and yeah, none of this was his idea, but he’s not making things easy on anyone else either. Enzo constantly is saving him and Shaun finally gets it through his head that if he’s not part of the solution, then he’s part of the problem. He and Enzo have a simmering attraction and as they are spending so much time together, maybe it can be more pleasant than Shaun’s general moody disagreeable demeanor.
Unfortuantely things don’t let up on the turf war side of things. Enzo and Shaun find themselves unable to deny their attraction, but they are in the middle of a pretty difficult situation. There are more twists and turns than a roller coaster and it affects everyone in their group. No spoilers, but it’s a crazy ride!
So it took me a while to warm up to Shaun – mostly because I totally understood his POV. He was dragged kicking and screaming into something he had no part in and it’s and extremely stressful situation to have your brother shot, be chased by mobsters, try to keep yourself and your friends safe and oh yeah, ignore the insane chemistry with your so-called bodyguard. Enzo has always done what he’s told and he’s acted as the enforcer for so long, but he really wants something with Shaun. Then there is the whole deal with Uncle Z and the Jonny Wellingham saga. There were some plot twists that I really didn’t see coming and it made the story that much more interesting. Originally when I picked up this series, I thought there were only going to be two books. But nope. Things are not resolved – so on to book 3 when it’s out. If you’re in the a ride with some nefarious characters, some steamy smexy times and can deal with some drama and violence (not too graphic) then I think you’ll enjoy this series.
