Rescue Me, Daddy by Michael Robert
TIM MILLER
My life in Valentine, Nebraska, wasn’t easy. At just nineteen, I found myself homeless and jobless with no prospects on the horizon. A life of abuse crushed people, but I still had space in my heart for love. With the support and guidance of an elderly widower, my life finally began to turn around.
Being young and gay in a small town brought challenges but I had goals for my life, one of which was to be loved. The arrival of a world famous author to our small community turned my world upside down. What did I have to offer a man like Davis? I have nothing but my heart. I hope it’s enough.
DAVIS HILL
After the end of my five-year relationship in Malibu, I was desperate for change. Even though my career was successful, I could still use an infusion of ideas for my next book. So I did the unthinkable and decided to randomly stick a pin in a map and relocate. My friends may have labeled me insane, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. A fresh start in a new town offered the chance to distract myself while I heal from the pain of a failed relationship.
Coming to the rescue of Tim on the very first day we met, was the beginning of one story I hadn’t expected. I had relocated to find a great story, but hadn’t expected to discover my own love story. Could a small town in the middle of nowhere offer a new beginning for both my heart and my career? Little did I know that small towns could have dark secrets that could threaten to shatter my heart.

“ Dude, you need to get a frikken’ cell phone already,” Shotzie said. “It’s impossible for us to scoop the hottest news if you keep living in the stone age. And I have the juiciest of shit to share, my friend.”
Whenever she wanted to highlight a part of her sentence, her voice lowered to a baritone, so the juiciest sounded like a man said it. The weird habit was even stranger due to the fact she was five foot tall and weighed ninety-five pounds on a full stomach.
Shotzie was one of two friends I had from high school. Like me, she’d been an outcast at Valentine High School. We’d recognized our plight while in third grade when she was crushing on me and I was blissfully unaware that I was in fact an outcast already, even at that age.
“I’m going to buy one with what?” I asked. “My good looks?”
“If the requirement was good looks, love, you’d own all of Apple.”
Shotzie was the only person who cared about building me up, and she continued doing it even after I revealed my secret of thinking I might be gay. She’d protested the disclosure when I told her during junior year, so she offered to kiss me to see if it was true. We kissed and she instantly concurred.
“You here with your dad?” I asked. She nodded and popped another stick of Juicy Fruit in her mouth. Shotzie always smelled like a fresh piece of her favorite gum. So much so she’d recently begun ordering it from Amazon in bulk.
Shotzie and her dad, referred to as Big Shotz, were joined at the hip. He was the owner of the town’s largest construction company, Shotzenheimer Building, one my stepdad had worked at previously. She’d acquired many of her dad’s skills. Rumor was her dad had wanted a boy but after her mother’s premature death, he created one of the town’s biggest up-and-coming construction queens.
She looked around to see if Mr. Hanks was nearby, but I’d heard him discussing a lumber order with her dad several aisles away.
“How the fuck did you get your stepdad to okay this job?” she asked, snapping her gum enthusiastically.
“I didn’t,” I answered, leaning closer before whispering. “Mr. Hanks threatened Harold with a shotgun and now I live with him. He gave me this job.”
“Fuck yeah!” she said. “About time someone threatened to shoot Harold. I’m only pissed it wasn’t me.”
