“So, Heriberto. What did you want to talk about?”
“Please, it’s Berto.”
“Right.”
“I…I’ve been reading. The pamphlets you made?”
“Mhm?”
He looks around and lowers his voice. “I wanted to know more about…asexuality.”
A tiny part of me stings with disappointment again. But no, I took an oath to help all of the broader queer community. Hooking up with him shouldn’t even be an idea in my head.
“What did you want to know?”
Refusing to meet my eyes, Berto looks out the window. “I just never…I always thought…”
“What?”
He takes a deep breath. “Sex has never been a big deal for me.”
“Mhm.”
“Like why do I even have to have it, ya know? Why do I need to chase after girls or let them hook up with me?”
“You don’t.” He gives me a heavy stare, and I could gaze into his brown eyes for hours. “No seriously, Berto, you don’t. You’re an adult. You should do whatever makes you feel right. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, I’ll always encourage that.” Even if that list of things he wants to do never includes me. That sucks, but I need to get over it. Bad horny Hunter.
Berto nods and his smile does nothing to quell my attraction to him. He taps his fingers on the table. “Thanks man. You know…you’re the first person I’ve ever said that to.”
That’s extra flattering considering he’s rich, famous, and sexy—everything I’m not. He studies me with reverence and curiosity as he sits across the table. I’ve known him for less than two days, but he makes a sparkler go off in my heart. Berto’s life is so much bigger than mine, yet he seems to really care about what I say.
If I’m not mistaken, Berto Navarro values me, and I don’t remember the last time anyone, platonic or not, has put me on a small, but significant pedestal.

CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. First, it was fanfiction, then YA queer novels, and now he’s moved up to the big leagues of adult MM romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.
