BLURB:
You’re a beautiful monster, and fate has bound us together for life.
After the murder of his parents, the rules of high society dictate that omega werewolf Shay find an alpha mate—and fast. While struggling with his overwhelming grief and being forced into a marriage he’s never wanted, his courting celebration yields yet another nightmare when fate
makes an unfortunate appearance.
Alfie is a gossip reporter and alpha werewolf who latches onto the same theory as everyone else; that Shay is responsible for the deaths of his parents. When Alfie sneaks into a courting party to get a look at the guilty young man for his column, he expects to see a murderer, but finds his fated mate instead.
Despite mutual disdain, Shay and Alfie are now inescapably entangled—all while a double homicide remains unsolved.
As their affections grow, so does the danger to their lives. Shay and Alfie might be fated, but can love conquer suspicion, grief, and the threat of death?
REVIEW:
Shay is an Omega, who is grief stricken after finding his parents murdered. If that wasn’t too much for anyone to bear, the law is clear that Shay must be married to an Alpha straightaway. Having been brought up by loving parents who paid lip service to the rules around Omega’s but allowed Shay freedom to be himself and explore avenues that interested him, including how his Father’s very successful company was ran. He now finds himself facing the very unpleasant realisation that he is being forced into a marriage he doesn’t want but has to endure, married to an Alpha whose only interest in him is his Father’s successful company and the money that entails.
Alfie is the cynical hard bitten news reporter, who despises the upper classes and their ridiculous rules around Omega’s and marriage. He thinks Shay murdered his parents and wants the scoop on him and sneaks into the suitor event to get it.
One whiff of an alluring scent down the corridor changes everything for Shay and Alfie, who are fated mates. It wasn’t plain sailing due to Shay’s debilitating grief over his parents which was depicted so heartbreakingly. That suffocating emotion that blanketed everything for Shay and the only thing that helped was Alfie, who was able to bring him back from the brink of emotional despair. There were also the unresolved murders of Shay’s parents with many people suspecting that Shay had murdered them. Alfie was determined to get to the bottom of the mystery and clear Shay’s name.
There was plenty of twists and turns in this plot and despite being fated mates and married the development of Shay and Alfie’s relationship was heartwarming, especially how protective Alfie was of Shay and how concerned he was about the depths of his grief and how much it affected him.
I also really liked the pushback against societies expectations that Omega’s acted a certain way, had to be looked after by Alpha’s and told what to do. Basically, look pretty and host parties. Shay despite everything was a clever man who wanted so much more from his life and discovering that Alfie was also an unconventional Alpha and prepared to give Shay as much freedom as he needed to pursue his goals was refreshing.
I enjoyed this upper-class society take on Alpha and Omega’s combined with a murder mystery plot.
