What happens when fate intertwines shifters from land and sea?
Dr. Everett Voda loves a challenge, which is why he’s spent his entire medical career traveling the world, helping shifters in remote areas. There has rarely been a problem he can’t solve, but Merritt Lucas might be the exception to that rule. Everett can’t figure out what’s wrong with Merritt, and his attraction to the younger wolf is starting to become a distraction, especially since they are about to spend a lot of time alone together.
Merritt doesn’t have much going for him. He doesn’t have a pack. He doesn’t have a secondary gender scent. And he’s fallen hopelessly head over heels for an alpha he can’t have. But that doesn’t stop him from taking Everett up on his offer to see the world and experience some of the shifter cultures he has only read about.
But Everett has hidden motives for the trip, and big changes are on the horizon for Merritt and Everett, changes that will either drive them apart or bond them for life.
REVIEW:
It was lovely to read book 2 in this series and what an unexpected book it is. I was glad that both Everett and Merritt got their own story and that this book takes place far away from the first book. Everett as an ob-gyn for shifters is in demand all over the world especially with rare shifters, he offers to take Merritt with him, so he can see firsthand some of the rare shifter cultures that he has only read about in books. Merritt is excited to go on this amazing adventure which will help him finish his PhD.
Merritt is a wolf without a pack who has never presented with the secondary scent shifters get in puberty to show if they are an alpha, beta or omega. Because he hasn’t got the secondary scent, he has never been part of a pack and suffers from his wolf shifting out of his control.
Everett is determined to find out why Merritt doesn’t have the scent and why he can’t control his shift, with his wolf sometimes taking over and forcing his shift. Everett is attracted to Merritt though he is trying to convince himself it’s just a friends things and he is intrigued by the puzzle Merritt presents.
Merritt is attracted to Everett but is convinced a Beta and Alpha have no future and Everett needs an Omega to fulfil his needs. They both struggle with their obvious attraction to each other, with both thinking it is one sided.
I loved the descriptions of the Owl Shifters in Greece, who have a matriarchal society comprising solely of female Owl Shifters who whilst still embracing their traditional culture are slowly opening their children to the outside world. It was a fabulous foray into ancient Greek history and mythology. Then it was off to Italy to another rare shifter pack and for Merritt to finally feel part of a pack that truly accepts him as he is, which results in a surprising transformation.
The relationship between Merritt and Everett blossoms and eventually they realise they are fated mates, it wasn’t instantly recognisable to them, in fact other people saw it far more clearly than they did themselves.
This was a vibrant colourful book that took us on a journey across the world, dipping into different cultures, as well as the journey of their relationship. The best parts of this book were going to help the Turtle Shifters lay eggs in the face of a hurricane. The notion that family is what you make it, and it can be made up in many different ways and that your biology doesn’t define who you are.
