A Thousand Vermilion Stars by Patricia Logan
F.B.I. Files, Book 3
A copycat serial killer is driving their whole team crazy.
Dr. Leo Reeves has always considered himself a halfway decent criminal profiler. Some of his colleagues even call him brilliant. With this assignment, he sure as hell doesn’t feel that way. He’s been missing something at every turn. The case is dragging into its seventh month and every lead he and his team follow, takes them to a dead end…literally. Leo sure hasn’t come up with anything to move things along, as hard as he’s tried. They’re no closer to capturing their killer…even after following him all the way to Miami.
Special Agent Max Prince is worried.
The longer this case goes on, the farther down the rabbit hole, his partner and lover, Leo, seems to fall. To make matters worse, back home in Los Angeles, detectives Cassidy Ryan and Mike Williams have turned up a second graveyard filled with some surprising victims…victims the team know well. Worse yet, Miami has left them with even more questions. When a good cop is murdered, the whole case turns on its head. Everyone wants answers and their team doesn’t have any.
Something has to change.
Worst of all, the copycat hasn’t stopped killing, leaving strange clues behind, even inserting himself into the case. When one of their own is put in horrible danger, and DNA results reveal a shocking truth, things get even more complicated. No one likes taking risks, especially when they involve meeting the killer on his terms. But taking that risk, might be the only way to resolve this case. Whether it’s the desert graveyards of SoCal, the sexy hot nights of South Beach’s gay scene, or the sticky bayous of New Orleans, Max and Leo have vowed to end this monster once and for all…if he doesn’t end them first.

“I’d say the killin’ of that dude in there is a better demonstration of a gift of friendship,” Max said, hooking his thumb at the bathroom.
“Maybe,” Leo said, frowning slightly before turning back and holding out his hands at the display of glasses. “But look at this. It’s like…” He glanced back at Max. “This is a form of art for him, almost as much as the way he took the skin off Allen’s neck. He wants to—”
“Please us,” Max said.
“Christ,” Snow growled.
Leo turned to look at the boss who stood beside Frank and Beth. Kindness was on the other side of the circle, squatting low and looking down and across it. Her brows were knitted together in deep consternation.
“In addition, I think he thinks he’s the most brilliant thinker ever born. He’s challenging us to figure out what he meant by the words in the note. My guess is he’s been waiting to deliver this message for a while, maybe even the last few months.”
“What’s the message?” Frank asked.
“He’s obsessed with us—not just me and Prince, but our whole team. He knows us by name, and he wants to be a part of the investigation. There are two of them, but I don’t think Campbell has much influence here. I think the copycat is running the show.” Leo held up his hand. “Don’t ask me why, it’s a feeling I get, nothing scientific. Either way, the killer also wants us to understand him, he wants us to get inside his head and he keeps dropping clues.”
“He practically told us he has OCD when he arranged all the condiments and jars in Alex Gutierrez’s guesthouse,” Beth said.
“And also the sizes of the vats and ingredients used to make meth at the warehouse in Acton,” Perez said.
“Yes!” Leo hissed.
“Okay, so assuming that’s all true,” Carlisle began, “and I’m not saying it’s not, what is a Fibonacci spiral telling us, except that he knows what it is?”
“I think I know.”
Everyone turned to look at Kindness as she straightened to her full height from her squat.
“What?” Lincoln asked.
“I think this is a map,” Kindness said.
