Joe Bagshaw doesn’t believe in love or marriage anymore, which is rather a hindrance for a wedding planner.
His own marriage was a whirlwind affair that ended before the ink could dry on the wedding certificate. Nevertheless, even with his divorce pending, he’s getting by. Or at least he was until he finds himself snowed in at a remote Scottish hotel with the wedding party from hell, a terrible ABBA tribute band, and his soon-to-be ex-husband.
Lachlan has missed Joe from the second his husband walked away. He wants Joe back and is prepared to do anything to get him. Being snowed in together seems to offer the chance Lachlan needs, but does he have what it takes to get Joe to trust in love and their marriage again?
REVIEW:
Confetti Hearts is an adorable, snarky, second chance romance featuring Joe, Dylan and Gabe’s lovable wedding planner from Vow Maker. The timeline is non-linear, beginning in the present day and then hopping back two years to when the men first met at a wedding where Joe was working and Lachlan was a guest. Their chemistry flares and a one night stand ensues. But then they run into each other at more weddings and again, they can’t keep their hands (and other body parts) off each other.
Lachlan is a cocky, worldly, wealthy, older man brimming with charm. Joe is impulsive, funny, kind, and irreverent, one of my favorite traits in romantic comedy heroes. Their chemistry is off the charts but there’s something more, something different – an attraction that goes deeper than just the physical. For both of them, it feels like much more than a typical hookup. They partake in a crazy, impulsive wedding of their own but the marriage begins to crumble almost immediately. It becomes one-sided with Lachlan afraid of intimacy and closing himself off to Joe. Joe protects himself by pulling back. They separate but Lachlan does everything possible to avoid signing the divorce papers.
Joe and Lachlan are both endearing characters and I was rooting the whole time for their reunion. Side characters from the Confetti Hitched wedding planning agency – Rafferty, Joe’s best friend and fellow wedding planner, and their boss, Jed – are clearly being set up as future leading men in their own stories in the series.
The pacing was slow in the beginning; I enjoyed the book more once they got snowed in at the hotel – forced to share a room… and only one bed! – and really began to work on their relationship. Who doesn’t love a good only one bed trope? As one of my favorite authors, my expectations are sky high for Morton and she almost always delivers. I didn’t find this book as compelling as most of her work, though, despite it being replete with British humor, witty banter and plenty of her signature snark. It was entertaining so I do recommend Confetti Hearts to all of Lily’s fans.
