REVIEW:
This is a very overdue review. When Dani asked if I was interested in reading the book and doing a review as a guest reviewer, I had tons of time, so what the heck? By the time I got the book, I was super busy with real life and totally forgot about doing it. I had it on my Kindle and forgot about it until Dani sent me a kind inquiry as to the status. I quickly discovered that I never in fact read the book! That is now rectified and I’m here to write the review on a book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The story opens as a continuation of book one. You wouldn’t necessarily have to read book one, but I wouldn’t recommend it as there are a lot of backstories carried over to this one.
We met Nick in the previous book and know that he is a witch who was a friend of Gabriel Mason from years ago. Somehow Nick has ended up in the exact same place as Gabriel all these years later. Both had secrets they didn’t share, and we learned in book one what Gabriel’s were. Now in book two we learn the truth about Nick. He was sent to the Coven he is in now because of a serious mistake he made with his magic. He has been punished with the removal of his magic for a period of 9 years and is in year 6. He hasn’t shared that information with anyone except his coven and his former friend and employer who is now in jail related to the poisonous drug trade. It turns out that guy also erased Nick and other characters memories. Nick hasn’t told anyone else, not even his other closest friends.
The events with the poisonous drug being imported from the land of the Fae are continuing, and a Fae Guard has been sent to assist the police. That Fae Guard is Dathal. It isn’t long before the case is getting complicated, and so is the relationship between Nick and Dathal. Dathal’s magic is somehow unlocking Nick’s blocked magic. What will happen if they continue, will Nick’s magic be fully unlocked? Will the Witch’s Council reinforce the block? Will they be able to solve the mystery of where the drug is coming from and going to?
I quite enjoyed the interplay between the two main characters, as well as Dathal’s cousin and the rest of the Fae. I recommend this book. Pick up the first in the series and then read this one. I believe you’ll enjoy the world that the author has created. I’ll be looking forward to the next in the series. This time I’ll probably just read it on my own though so that I’m not a month plus overdue on a future review!
