“Wait. Why is he here?”
“He wanted to speak to you.”
“Well, I’m in London.”
“I know that . He’s got some sort of ghost problem and needs you. I said I’d help if I could.” I shake my head. “I don’t know why. I won’t be much use.”
“You’ll be very good.”
“I can’t deal with something I’ve never seen.”
“Didn’t stop you sexting Francois.” I laugh. “Stop. I’m trying to be serious.”
“I’m waiting with bated breath.”
“You’re very good at dealing with the living. You’ve got a very comforting presence, Will.”
“It’s just because I’m six foot five.”
“My gentle giant,” he says affectionately.
The figure steps back from the glass. “I’ve got to go,” I say quickly.
“Okay. Ring me tonight and give me all the details.”
“I thought you couldn’t help him.”
“Not those details. I want to know what he was wearing, and did he bring flowers? I also need to know his secret.”
“What secret?”
“How he manages to turn someone who has always been so cool, someone who could pull with a wink and a smile, into a bumbling, accident-prone mess.”
“You’re a complete wanker,” I say, opening the door and grinning at Jem.
“ Me ?” he mouths, holding his hand to his chest, his eyes brimming with mirth.
“Quite possibly,” I say. “Blue, I’ll speak to you later.”
I end the call, stand back from the door, and wave him in. “Come in. I’ll put the kettle on.”
He wanders into the hallway, looking around. “God, I love this house.”
He pauses, and I don’t stop quickly enough and bang into the edge of the console table. The fact that I was staring at his arse is neither here nor there.
“Ouch,” I say plaintively, and his lips twitch. “You wouldn’t have liked it so much when there was a violent, serial-killing ghost living here,” I add quickly.
He follows me into the kitchen, puts his bag on a chair, and leans against the counter, watching me get out a couple of mugs. He’s dressed in faded jeans, a sky-blue T-shirt, and an old pair of Converse. A simple outfit, but he wears it as if he’s going to have a wander down the catwalk after this.
“You were around then, weren’t you, Will? Was it bad?”
