Chapter 3: Sal Henrik
“Read to me,” I requested.
One of Haverford’s eyebrows arched up at my demand. “I’m pretty sure reading this sex scene out loud would make us both uncomfortable.”
“But you have no problem reading it silently when I’m next to you?”
The amusement in his deep voice made heat churn in my stomach. “I’m not in danger of getting a hard-on if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Then it must not be a well-written book.” That was a thought I wouldn’t touch. The last thing I needed to imagine was Haverford jerking off when I was naked in bed with the guy. “That situation will happen to one of us, eventually.”
“I would assume you since you’re younger.”
I resented the implication. “Hey, I’m not that young. I’m twenty-eight.”
“Eight years older than Calixto still makes you a baby in my book.” Haverford’s tone was light and teasing, but his words annoyed me.
If he wanted to be annoying, then I could be obnoxious. “Okay, gramps. I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Gramps?” The indignant expression on his face made it hard not to fall out of bed laughing at him.
“Would you prefer ‘bobo’ or ‘poppy’ instead?” I rubbed my chin as I pretended to consider names. “You don’t feel like ‘pop-pop’ material to me.”
“Forty-one hardly qualifies me to be your grandfather.”
His annoyed response made me laugh hard. “Whatever you say, pawpaw.”
“Keep it up, babykins. You’ll lose this war.”
I howled at the hilarious pet name. “Oh, I should keep it up, if only for the sheer joy of making you call me something as ridiculous as ‘babykins’ with a straight face.”
“Unless you want to be my bitsyboo for the next two months, we should call a truce now.”
I snorted at the absurdity of his pet names. It should piss me off he was calling me such cutesy things in retaliation, but it was too funny to be mad for real. “But what if I want to be your bugaboo forever? I mean, you are a damn good cook.”
I could tell he was fighting not to laugh. “If you ever want me to cook for you again, knock it off with the stupid grandpa nicknames.”
“Are you going to ground me if I don’t?”
He reached down to ruffle my hair. “What happened to being tired? Do us both a favor and go to sleep.”
I swatted his hand away. “It’s not my fault I can’t sleep with you here.”
“Don’t you sleep on a tour bus with other people all the time?”
“That’s different. We all have our own beds, although Tiago and Ferris share one now. I don’t know why they want to share what’s basically a glorified cubbyhole. There’s no room for two people. And yet, they still manage to defy physics to have sex in there.”
“I’m assuming they’re dating?”
“Yeah, they’re the most nauseatingly cute couple you’ve ever seen.” It was hard not to be envious, although I was genuinely happy for them. “But Tiago has never met a boundary he didn’t want to cross, so I know way more than I need to about their relationship.”
“That sounds like you’ve walked in on them having sex on the tour bus.”
“Twice.” I huffed with annoyance. “It’s so gross. It’s like seeing my brothers have sex.”
Haverford chuckled. “Yes, I could see that being a bit awkward. Do you have real brothers?”
“No, just those two goobers, Levi, and Iason. I’m the youngest in the band, so I’m the de facto baby bro. It drove me nuts when I first started playing with the guys, but I treasure the bond now, at least enough to put up with all of Tiago’s antics. But if you ever tell him that, I’ll deny it to my dying day.”
“He sounds like a handful.”
I snickered. “Oh, he’s at least three. You’ve never met anyone in your life as extra as him.” Despite all my protests, I was bummed the tour had been postponed. Some of my fondest memories were of the time we all spent together hanging out on the bus in between gigs.
It surprised me when Haverford stroked my hair, treating me like I was his affectionate cat. I hated that I liked it. “Get some sleep, Salazar.”
“Ugh, I’d rather be your moogie-bear than Salazar.” I scowled with annoyance, even as his touch soothed something within me. The only person who showed me physical affection on a regular basis was Tiago, so it was nice to experience it from someone else for once.
But why did it have to feel so good coming from my enemy?
