A killer is working the night shift at Salem Mercy Hospital. Or at least that’s what psychic Copeland Forbes believes after an exposé highlighting unexplained deaths is published. Wanting to get involved, he’s cautioned to let the matter go. People die in hospitals, Cope’s told, and while that’s unfortunately true, he knows these deaths are not from natural causes.
Detective Jude Byrne is content working his agency’s slate of cases, staking out cheating spouses and uncovering insurance fraud. The last investigation he wants go get involved with is that of the possible hospital killer. But after suffering a basketball injury which requires surgery and an overnight stay at Salem Mercy, Jude is involved whether he wants to be or not. The question is, can he survive the night?
With the help of the West Side Detectives, a clever trap is laid. All that’s left to do is wait for the start of the graveyard shift when the hunter is on the prowl. Can the madman be stopped in time? Or will Jude become the next victim to suffer a killer cure on the ghost shift?
REVIEW:
When you get to the thirteenth book in a series, there can be a tendency to become formulaic with the general story. That, however, is not the case with this book/series by Pandora Pine. This is also not a standalone series or spinoff series. You should read this series and the Cold case series in publication order. As these stories are all interconnected.
With each book in this series the worldbuilding becomes even more impressive. We get to explore and experience more and more of the town of Salem with each new story. Salem and its history have become an integral part of this series.
Pandora has stepped up even more on her character development. We don’t just get a glimpse into the lives of these characters. It’s a full-on deep dive into what married with children really is like. Sometimes this in-depth dive was a bit dark and seemed to help create the right tone for the book. Which really heightened the story. There is a sense of desperation that we experience not only from Jude and Copeland the main characters but also from Tennyson and Ronan, side characters in this series.
Once more Pandora has brought her A game to expanding this series and creating a mystery that required all of the Scooby Gang to solve. The mystery in this one was crafted brilliantly. The action and introspection in this one created a page turner for me.
If you love a great murder mystery this is the series and book for you. As with most if not all of Pandora’s books, I find that I have a hard time solving the mystery before she reveals it. I highly recommend that if you want to know how this one ends and who Lizbet is you should grab a copy of this one. I am anticipating the next book she releases.
