The cloth fluttered on the breeze, and Dawson pulled a silver wind chime from his bag, which he also hung from the tree. “Time to make the offering.”
Grady watched as Dawson took out a pottery bowl. He added cream, meadowsweet, whiskey, and vanilla paste. “They like all these.” Dawson stirred the mixture. “And it’s a sign of goodwill.”
Something growled nearby, low and deep.
“Daw—something’s coming,” Grady warned. He pulled his knife and stood where he could protect Dawson, who knelt beside the tree, completing the offering. Dawson couldn’t stop mid-ritual, and Grady had no idea what the penalty might be for interrupting the spell.
Heavy footfalls and the sound of breaking branches gave Grady a heartbeat’s warning before a huge, misshapen creature broke through the underbrush, barreling toward them.
Grady had only seconds to respond. He wished he had his gun or at least a sword. The black shuck was as large as a Saint Bernard, with matted, filthy fur and malevolent red eyes. Long fangs and sharp claws seemed more than a match for his knife, but Grady had no intention of letting it get to Dawson.
The shuck lunged, and Grady stepped into the attack, landing a vicious slash that caught the beast across the chest, spilling dark blood onto the trampled grass. Dawson kept chanting, although Grady heard the fear in his partner’s voice.
Still bleeding, the shuck leapt at Grady, taking them both to the ground with a snarl and the flash of teeth. Grady bucked, trying to throw the shuck off and realizing the beast equaled his weight. He twisted away from snapping fangs and the breath that stank of sulfur and carrion.
Grady sank his knife hilt-deep between the shuck’s ribs, and the creature shrieked in pain. Hot blood poured over Grady like acid on his skin, and one massive paw slashed talons across his shoulder and chest, opening deep furrows.
Dawson finished the incantation with a hoarse shout and, in the next breath, threw himself onto the shuck’s back, swinging his blade to sever its head and then kicking the body away from Grady.
“Gray!” Dawson fell to his knees beside him…
