TITLE: The Wandering Prince
SERIES: 13 Kingdoms
AUTHOR: H L Day
PUBLISHER: Self Published
LENGTH: 359 Pages
RELEASE DATE: January 24, 2023
BLURB:
An ailing father. A missing healer who might have the cure. Now would be a really bad time for Jack and Sebastian to be at loggerheads.
Jack never saw the truth coming. And knowing Sebastian has been lying to him changes everything. Yet, despite his misgivings over whether their relationship can be repaired, he finds himself on a ship to Padora, Sebastian’s homeland. Awkward isn’t the word. And peril, as ever, is just over the next wave.
Sebastian’s whole world is falling apart. His magic is broken. His father, the king of Padora, is dying. And Jack… Well, Jack hates him, and not in the usual Jack way. He’s really messed up this time, and doesn’t know how to put it right.
Can Jack and Sebastian survive to save the day once more? And if they do, will it fix what was broken between them?
The Wandering Prince is a 101k finale to Jack and Sebastian’s humorous MM fantasy adventure that started with The Reluctant Companion and continued with The Stubborn Accomplice. Travel with Jack and Sebastian as they encounter old friends, sea monsters, a future king who needs babysitting, dastardly pirates who have been polishing their plank, a double-crossing brother, and perhaps even a missing sister.
REVIEW:
Revealing the last of his secrets creates strain within Sebastian and Jack’s relationship. However, events are afoot that force some re-evaluation. A dying king is among them. Upon returning to Padora, Bass and Jack are subjected to palace life, and a couple of other surprises, until a decision is made that the two should embark on a mission to find a specific healer who could cure the king.
The Wandering Prince is the last in the 13 Kingdom series – and my favorite. The other two in the series were excellent, but this story contains extra emotional angst, which gave me something extra, elevating it to full marks.
While all the books in the series were very entertaining, I found the first book set the tone of the series, the second solidified the relationship, and the third was the piece-de-resistance that ties up all the loose ends, with a cherry on top. Have no fear; Jack’s missing sister hasn’t been forgotten.
Like the other books in the series, the tale is told in the first person, with chapters from Jack and Sebastians’ viewpoints. I was too engrossed in the story to notice anything technical, but nothing jumped out at me other than the odd missing dialogue quotes. While the world created has already been established, this third book adds another delightfully different picture to the map. Among others, these include local shenanigans, a shapeshifter, pig catching, kidnapping, and a life at sea.
Jack and Sebastian continue with all the snarky banter considered foreplay, but it is also more emotionally charged than the other stories. The blurb says Sebastian’s magic is broken, so no, I’m not giving away spoilers. Nevertheless, the predicament gives each situation that extra bit of edgy danger.
The Wandering Prince was a story I couldn’t wait to return from work and read more of. There’s also the vaguest of hints that, although this series may have come to an end – the adventures of Jack and Sebastian may continue. I truly hope so.
