Being in love with my straight friend isn’t easy…
I thought pining for Daniel was an epic tragedy, but then I found out I’m a conduit—someone who can communicate with beings from the otherworld—and my unrequited love for one of my best friends seems less of a problem.
So when a spirit is destroyed while trying to warn me of an approaching disaster, it makes sense for Daniel to step up and help me search for more information. Or it does until my mom turns up twenty years after abandoning me and Daniel turns into Mr. Protective. One thing leads to another, and somehow the whole town now thinks we’re dating.
As if all that isn’t enough to deal with, Daniel’s having a bisexual awakening, and he’s looking to me, his gay friend, to guide him through it. I’d do anything for him, but the thought of being with him and then watching him move on to another guy… I don’t know if my heart can take it.
But I have to toughen up and get on with it, because whatever’s happening in the otherworld is spilling over to here, and it’s going to take everyone we’ve got to keep humanity safe… if we can.
REVIEW:
I have been waiting for this pairing since Louisa first introduced this series. Daniel and Skye are perfect for each other. This is the third book in the series and these books must be read in order, as each book builds on the cross-book story arc. Be warned this one does end in cliffhanger.. The worldbuilding is wonderful. She has created this wonderfully diverse paranormal world, that encompasses, straight, bi, gay, ghosts, demons, and everything in between. And her characters are also very diverse and colorful. The main characters in this book have been dancing around each other since the first book. Finally, they get to tell their story. Daniel and Skye are well fleshed out and that carries over to the side characters. The cast of supporting characters in this book relies on previously introduced main characters and a very important aspect of the story – the ghosts that reside at Mannix Estate. Not to be disappointed, the sexy times are hot and well done. Louisa handles the subject matter of a Bi awakening with great care and not anything too over the top. I’m sure the ghosts might’ve learned a few things, though. You can always count on a little drama to accompany these great stories. Not only are they battling a potentially new demon, but Skye’s mother has also come back to town.
Norval looks Skye up and down. “You’re not as ditzy as you look.” “Hey,” I start. “There’s no need for insults.” Skye just smiles serenely and replies, “You of all people should know better than to judge intelligence based on looks.” There’s a startled silence, and then Norval bursts out laughing and slaps his thigh. “Spending time with you is gonna be fun, boy. I’ve always liked the feisty ones.” Suddenly, Skye looks like he’s regretting all his life choices.
I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful banter between the ghosts and the staff on the estate. If you’ve been waiting like me for Daniel and Skye’s story, you need to login to your e-reader and get this book. I highly recommend it. With this one ending in a cliffhanger, I am super anxious to get my hands on the next book in this series – no pressure Louisa.
