Parker Ferro is fine.
Sure, he’s still recovering from his last case and his sister has started keeping secrets, but that’s just another day in the life of the Windrose of San Amaro.
Then the local werewolf alpha calls in a favor when he’s turned on by his own pack and the last thing Parker wants to do is get mired in the city’s pack politics. Throw in the recent murder of a local cult leader with disturbing connections to the hidden fae in San Amaro, a long lost relative showing up to reconnect, and a group of brownies taking up residence in his car, and Parker cannot catch a break.
Hopefully he can solve this case and figure out some family secrets before everything blows up in his face, taking the city along with it.
REVIEW:
Parker Ferro is not fine.
He’s always getting himself in trouble, and this time is no different.
If you haven’t started reading the San Amaro series, I’ll stop you right here. Go back & start reading them – they are amazing and the series is almost wrapping up so if you start now, you’ll be ready for the last book releasing the end of February.
With that out of the way, for the rest that have gotten this far, there’s still lots more to tell. Parker’s always getting himself in these pickles and trying to figure out the mysteries surrounding the community, and frankly, all the other worlds.
While this sometimes read like a gumshoe early on, it has developed into a deeper story. We still get some humorous situations but they aren’t quite laugh out loud. What has happened is that the overall arc has deepened and developed as the series progresses. Every book in the series has something heavy to deal with in Parker’s life. After the last book, he and his sister are still reeling from their loss. And now he’s found another person that could be important in his life and he’s had to readjust his worldview once again. Oh, and he has a brownie infestation. Who has taken over his junk heap of a car. I always feel like saying this – Parker can’t catch a break.
In talking about arcs, Butler has done an excellent job of running them throughout the series. There is the overarching arc that continues to develop, and then there’s the arc of each book. It’s not just a ‘mystery of a week’ but a serious situation each time that helps Parker develop into a more responsible person, which has its price. I also love that she brings in all these story threads that don’t seem to relate but then circle back together to help everyone out.
I know it’s a fine balance of giving away too much in a review for people that have not read it but also for people who have, and so I always keep these a bit vague. I will say that these are some of the best books being written right now in the genre, so keep at it, or start reading now!
