Emissary by A.L. Morrow
Star-Crossed Celestials, Prequel
The line between angel and demon is razor thin. No one knows this better than Kai.
As an Emissary of death, darkness follows Kai like a shadow, leaving him touch-starved and lonely. Tormented by the error in judgment that killed his only love, he accepts an assignment to redeem himself: hunting down the demons destroying the mortal realm. But fate takes a turn, and Kai finds himself drawn to one of his targets instead.
Demonic martial arts expert Byron Black has struggled to survive his entire life. He has fought for every breath he’s taken and each bite he’s eaten, yet in the instant when his demise finally seems inevitable, death incarnate steps forward and spares him. Kai is as beautiful as he is terrifying, and although Byron suspects the angel’s interest in him is more than it appears, he can’t stay away.
Together, the pair search for answers regarding who wants Byron dead—and why—but uncovering the truth might destroy them both in the process. Can Kai defeat his inner demons to save the one that has crawled into his bed?

Byron swallowed hard, that tempting little knob in his neck shifting deliciously. “I was beginning to worry I had the wrong place—or that I’d taken too long, and you’d gone on without me.”
It really wasn’t fair how pretty and glistening those wide eyes were. Kai couldn’t stand looking at them for more than a few seconds right now, knowing what he’d have to do tomorrow when this was over. To distract himself, he stooped to heave the body up over his shoulder once more.
“You needn’t have worried,” he said as he began to walk toward the rear door to the old brick building in front of them. “I would have paid you one way or another.”
The boy moved quickly, trying to keep pace with Kai’s longer strides. “I wasn’t worried about the money.”
Kai stopped short a few feet from the door and turned to look at him. Malvolio’s legs swung, and Byron ducked to avoid taking the dead demon’s feet to the side of his head.
“Then what worried you?”
For a second, the boy’s bottom lip dropped. Then, he repeated his infernal, single-word question from earlier—the question that had nagged at Kai’s conscience all day since he’d left the crypt. “Why?”
Kai’s mouth formed a tight, hard line. He turned away again. Why had he saved the boy in Rio? That was what he wanted to know, wasn’t it? Kai wasn’t so sure he fully understood why himself anymore. So, he gave the best response he could.
“It wasn’t your time to die.”
It still wasn’t, either. Kai had checked. He’d gone back to his suite after leaving Malvolio in the crypt earlier, closed his eyes, and searched the stars—nearly gave himself a migraine doing it, too. But nothing had changed for Byron, despite how he hoped that it had. Malvolio and the others had earned their way onto Nash’s hit list. As far as Kai could tell, Byron still had the cosmos on his side.
Kai was bound to kill an innocent man … no, boy. Man-boy. Whatever he was, he was going to die.
