At thirty-eight years old, you’d think I’d know what I want in life. Prior to being shot, I’d tell you I did. Sure, the picture didn’t include a spouse, or even my own family, but it did include my dream job of Detective in the Orlando Police Department, and enough intimacy to keep me going.
That bullet tore through more than my shoulder that day. It sent me down a romantic path that’s turned into a freefall.
My newfound desire for someone to come home to has put dents in my already damaged heart that make me crave the way things used to be. The occasional fling, and days filled with fixing everyone else’s problems in this city but my own.
But even that plan falters when I enter the Stay Grounded coffee shop and meet Irish-born owner Alex O’Reilly. Our conversation goes down as smoothly as the coffee, and I find myself craving the very thing I swore I was done with. After a strange break-in at Stay Grounded stops us in our tracks I’m faced with how far under I’ve fallen, and how good it felt to come up for a fresh breath of air with someone as unique as Alex.
And that, is just as terrifying as the escalation this criminal seems hell-bent on.
Keeping Alex and his business safe is my job.
Keeping his heart safe? That’s not something I’m sure I’m fit for anymore.
REVIEW:
BH Lynn is a new to me author and I’m always excited to read stories from them. For a short story and the first story in her new Stay Grounded series, I found that I liked the overall storyline of the series. This story has some really good and creative bones to it. BH has created this story universe using Orlando, FL as the backdrop. I would characterize this story/series as a procedural with some romance thrown in to add depth to the characters in this story. It does have some hurt/comfort aspects to the overall story, as Trevor is suffering from PTSD – after being shot and Alex is a nurturing soul, that wants to be loved and not left alone.
“Welcome to Stay Grounded Coffee. What can I get for you?” The man turned around and set down the espresso shot container he had been drying by hand. Waves of long, chestnut hair were tucked up in a bun, and his bearded face and his brown eyes rang with a genuine, kind energy. He had a lanky frame— at least six-foot-five— with long, graceful hands that marked by working man scars. It took a belt to hold his black jeans up on his slim waist, but he looked sturdy on his feet. There wasn’t anything about him that usually rang my bell, but when he smiled at me, I could feel it work its way into the empty compartments of my chest.
Character development was well done. From the main characters to the side characters. I especially liked Trevor’s his partner on the police force and his friend, Jules. She’s a no-nonsense former Marine, who pushes and nurture’s Trevor to be a better, more in the moment human being. The mystery story line didn’t peak too soon, nor did it reveal who the final suspect was before the appropriate time in the story. I enjoyed this book, some minor incontinences took me out of the story a few times, but overall, I enjoyed the story. I look forward to the next book in the series.
