TITLE: 911 Vampire
AUTHOR: Caleb James
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 368 Pages
RELEASE DATE: June 7, 2022
BLURB:
A vampire succubus created during the Black Plague, Godfrey works as a Boston paramedic and battles loneliness and exhaustion as he fights to keep humanity safe from twin COVID and opioid epidemics.
He has always pursued that which provides him hope—medicine, the cello… love. But yielding to his feelings for his work partner, Trevor, would conflict with Godfrey’s complicated moral code. Instead he feeds on sexual energy when he must and investigates a drug ring in his spare time.
But even a vampire can’t ignore his feelings forever.
REVIEW:
The first thing I have to do is apologise to the author. I picked up the book last year and couldn’t get into it at first. It was no fault of the author, just where I was at the time. Then I completely forgot about it. I’m in a better place now and I am finally finishing up my books.
Godfrey is an interesting character. He’s a bit of a different take on the vampire lore but I like it. He’s smart and determined to do his best for humanity, even when they aren’t doing the best for themselves.
Trevor is tormented. He’s working hard to achieve his dreams but it feels like he’s trying to slog through molasses, getting nowhere fast. And his feelings for Godfrey are messing with his mind. This is almost his “coming of age” story.
I love the dynamic between Trevor and Godfrey. Both are hardworking but Trevor is a “follow the rules” kind of guy. Godfrey, however, is not. He’s a “do the right thing even if it’s against the rules” kind of guy. And his feelings for Trevor are making things so much harder for him.
This book gives us several different shots of how the world really works and I have a feeling that the author’s background as a psychiatrist really helps him get it right.
However, it also makes me wonder if he’s testing his readers as well.
I am very rarely ever suprised by a book. I can usually see where they are going even if I don’t always know how they are going to get there. This one did. I had no idea it was going to end on a cliff-hanger and to be honest, I wouldn’t have read it at all if I did. There’s no indication in the blurb or the information sent to the blog. There’s also no indication of a second book coming soon. The reason I don’t review unfinished series is because I’ve been screwed over too many times by authors who don’t finish a series.
There are very few exceptions to this rule.
So this makes it hard for me to “recommend” this book. It’s brilliantly written, with a fantastic premise. The characters are compelling and I was so entrenched in the story, that when the end came, I was thrown into a blind rage. Only the fact that I was reading on my computer prevented me from throwing the “book” across the room. I have only been this enraged by an ending once before. It was Randy by C Jane Elliot and I’m still salty about that one.
I guess all I can do it say it was a fantastic read and I’m really, really hoping that the author will write what needs to come next.

Just finished ” 911 Vampire ” and read your review. I’m so glad I did; now I don’t feel quite as alone and pissed off about the ending because I have your company in frustration. How could he do that to the readers with no sequel. Thanks for listening. Please post if a sequel shows up.
