If the wreck wasn’t enough incentive for us to get together, the cosmic universe practically shoves me into his arms when we get snowed in, with nothing else to do besides getting to know each other.

Maybe if I’m lucky, he’ll be the one “rear-ending” me in bed tonight.

Chapter 2: Tavish Hartigan

Although I told myself I shouldn’t do it, I hugged Leith hard as I hid my face against his chest. It was the best feeling in the world when he wrapped his arms around me and held me closer. “Thank you for talking the sheriff out of giving me a ticket. I don’t know how I can ever repay you for helping me when I don’t deserve it.”

He once again stroked my hair, making me feel like an indulgent cat who couldn’t get enough of the gentle petting. “You absolutely deserve it. You’re a sweetheart having a terrible day. The last thing you needed was a ticket to make everything worse. Jack’s a good guy, but sometimes he gets a little too focused on playing by the rules.”

I closed my eyes and enjoyed how amazing it felt to be held by someone so much bigger than me. It made all my problems disappear in that moment, which was incredible, considering I didn’t know where I was going to sleep tonight.

“Do you know anyone in Wintervale you can stay with?” Leith asked, almost as if he could read my mind.

I shook my head. “No, I don’t know anybody in town since I don’t go to school here yet. I’m supposed to be moving in this weekend, but the place isn’t ready for me now.”

Leith put a little distance between us to gaze down at me, but he didn’t make me let him go. “You’re in a tough spot. All the hotels are booked, your apartment isn’t ready, you don’t know anyone in town, and you live too far away to go home. The only other solution I can think of is having you stay at my place until your car is ready.”

Under normal circumstances, my anxiety would scream at me I was about to become a horror story on a true crime podcast. But everything about Leith set me at ease. Besides being incredibly kind, he obviously knew everyone. In a small town like Wintervale, that meant he’d never get away with murdering me without getting caught.

When I didn’t respond right away, Leith continued. “You can stay with me for a few days until we’re unburied from this storm and your car is ready. If it ends up being totaled, I’ll drive you back to Boulder once the roads clear up.”

His offer touched me. “You’d really do that?”

“Absolutely.” His warm smile made my heart flutter. He was Prince Charming personified. With his good looks and dazzling smile, he certainly looked the part. I didn’t know how he wasn’t freezing to death in his sweater and jeans since he had given me his winter coat. “If you want to video call your parents from my place to tell them you’re okay and where you are, I’d be happy to introduce myself to put them at ease about you staying with a stranger.”

His offer took away the niggling concern I had. What kind of murderer would identify himself and his location? “That would be great, if it’s not too much trouble.”

“It’s no trouble at all.” He gave my shoulders a reassuring squeeze before stepping away and gesturing for me to follow him. “But we need to get going soon before the roads become impassable.”
