Out of the Cage: An altered human isn’t surprised when Fate pairs him with a wolf shifter, but he is by the trouble dogging the man’s steps.
Miles Philson had his world nearly destroyed by a man who he should have been able to trust and look up to. Instead, it made him wary of forming connections of just about any kind. After joining the military, his brothers in arms helped him get past some of that, only to have that same general turn his life upside down all over again—by mutating him and his team into cheetah shifters and chemically altering their minds.
Once rescued from the general’s clutches, Miles watches the other members of his team meet and fall in love with what the shifter world calls fated mates. When he meets wolf shifter Ron Reussmin and feels the pull, he understands what it means. The new feline presence in Miles’s mind wants the boisterous, good-natured man, and Miles finally understands why his buddies didn’t resist their new partners for long.
Unfortunately, Ron is a deputy in Stone Ridge, and they’re going through some growing pains. An ex-employee is doing her best to stir up trouble. Can Miles keep his wolf shifter safe while staying off the radar of the shadow branch of the military that’s searching for him and his team?
REVIEW:
Note: While this is number 59 in this series it can be read as a stand alone, although there are circumstance and characters from other stories that may be a bit confusing here for those who have not been following the series.
Ron Reussmin is a wolf shifter and deputy with the Stone Ridge Sherriff’s department. He’s out for a run one day when he somehow gets snared in a trap. Lucky for him, Miles Philson, one of the soldiers who ha been turned into a cheetah and has been staying with Alpha Declan while he learns what it means to be a shifter now, is out with some others from the pack doing some target practice and happens upon him and his would be trapper. It’s clear the man knows about shifters as he’s threatens to sell him to the highest bidder.
Ron recognizes Miles’ scent as his mate right away as he is being rescued from the trap and the hunter. Miles knows something is happening too, but he’s never been with a man before. It doesn’t particularly bother him that his mate is male, except he feels embarrassed that he’s so inexperienced while Ron is obviously not. Miles doesn’t think he’ll be good enough for Ron, so he pulls back a bit.
In the meantime, there are obviously those who are unhappy about all the happy gay couples in town. That displeasure seems to then overlap with hunters who are determined to capture the shifters as well. They are just two kinds of “abominations” to these guys. Ron is definitely in there sights as he is attacked again and suffers some critical injuries. Luckily Miles is there to help him recover – although it does put a crimp in their mate bonding activities 😉
It interesting to see more the soldier/shifters and discover that they are a bit different the the born shifters. And of course we get a visit from Jared/Prier which is always a bonus in my book 😀 There are a few new wrinkles here with the hunters who know about shifters and it’s clear that they are taking advantage of the homophobia of a prominent person in town who has far to much access to things. I always enjoy seeing more of the pack in their lives, so that was fun too – especially Lark in doc mode. If you’re a fan of the series, I think you’ll like this one.
