Description
Orion was born to a wild werewolf pack that spent more time as beasts than men. That changed when he met an elf of the Redwood, Thalanil. For the first time in over a month, the timber wolf felt compelled to return to human form when he sensed the presence of his mate.
Thalanil had never thought to be bonded to a werewolf, of all things, though he wasn’t about to question the fate given to him by the Earth Mother. When he returned to his military duties, he had a new mate in tow. Together, they found a home with their spec ops team and a purpose in life.
Now, as the holdouts of the Inquisition have been rooted out one by one, the team has been called upon to aid in their destruction once and for all. With Shaw and Marcus returned, it should be a quick and easy job. Except, dark magic like they have never seen before lurks around every corner. Their only hope to survive might be found in a trio of powerful mate bonds and the magic of their tribe.

Dirty and tired, Thalanil just wanted to see Orion. Despite not truly bonding, the time they had spent with each other had started to tie them together all the same. Being away from Orion was becoming harder each time, and his presence was like a calming balm.
Thalanil’s single-minded focus on getting back to his quarters was impeded when someone stepped in his path. His eyes narrowed on the stranger before he noted the bars on the man’s jacket and snapped to attention. “Commander.”
“At ease, Thalanil.” He smiled, revealing fangs, as he offered his hand. “Commander Rhys. Shalesword Outpost.”
“Pleasure to meet you,” Thalanil said, accepting the handshake. The vampire’s reputation preceded him, especially in the special operations community. “What can I help you with?”
“I’ll be blunt. I want you and your…bonded to transfer to my outpost.”
Thalanil’s brows lowered. “Orion’s not enlisted.”
“Maybe not, but a soulbonded pair is an asset. A Redwood Pack wolf? Even more so. Besides, if I need you out on extended missions, we can’t have you dying, now can we?” The slight smirk told Thalanil that Rhys somehow knew the truth.
“Just what is it you want with us exactly?”
“I’m putting together a new unit under the umbrella of the Special Operations Division. You would report directly to me. Your missions would entail classified black ops.” Thalanil raised a brow. There had to be more to it than that. “It will also be the first unit composed almost entirely of magicae.”
Well, that was intriguing. Even so, he already had commitments. “My squad here—”
“I’ve already cleared it with Captain Lenai. Because of the nature of the assignment, I can’t force a transfer. This is completely voluntary. But, frankly, I need you to lead this team.”
“No,” Thalanil said immediately. “If I were going to do this, I couldn’t be a team lead.”
“You’re the most experienced of all the men I’m gathering. And you’re a skilled leader.”
“Not if I’m leading my bonded into danger.”
Rhys nodded. “I suppose that would cause a conflict of interest.” He took a deep breath, mulling it over. “I’d rather have a bonded pair, so if that’s the agreement you need…”
“I’d have to talk to Orion about it. I’m honestly not sure what he’ll say about all this. Frankly, I don’t know that I want him to be involved.” Orion had often likened himself to a hunter rather than a warrior. To a werewolf, at least of the Redwood Pack, they were two very different things. “He’s still not enlisted though. Basic takes time, and then you have all the advanced courses. That could take—”
“I’ve already green-lighted a contractor for this team,” Rhys interrupted. “I can add another green member to the list without raising too many eyebrows. Especially given the circumstances.”
“Contractor?” Thalanil watched Rhys carefully. “So what are we? Your own personal mercenaries?”
“Hardly. You’re an elite unit with a diverse skill set to go where we need you at a moment’s notice. It’s called black ops for a reason, Thalanil. You’ve been around here long enough to know what that means.”
“Yeah,” he answered quietly, “I know.” Thalanil paused before repeating, “I’ll have to talk to Orion.”
“You do that. And then when he agrees, come see me. I’ll give you both leave so you can go home and get soulbonded properly.” Rhys smiled that knowing smile once more. “Everyone will be coming off current assignments at different times, so I can’t give you a timeframe for when you’ll need to report in. But it should be long enough to adjust to a bonding.”
Thalanil watched the commander walk away—just like that.
