Rescued by Hayden Hall
Sanctuary, Book 1
Running away is only the first step. Moving on is the hardest.
When Archer Navarro escapes his emotionally abusive boyfriend in the middle of the night, he hopes to step into a better life.
A turn of bad luck ends Archer’s flights as soon as it starts, but the kindness of strangers brings him to an LGBT shelter.
And it brings him to Brooklyn. He’s the moody, drop-dead gorgeous tenant in the apartment next door, and he soon becomes the source of Archer’s hope.
Their chemistry is instant. It’s hot enough to melt the snow that’s about to bury them. Brooklyn makes Archer believe there still might be some love in him left to give.
If only the past wasn’t getting in the way. If only Archer could let those around him help.
The road of trials tests these men’s will to hold onto one another.
Tensions with his estranged family and a lifetime of scars threaten to take Archer back to where it all started. Back to the house where he was a little more than a prisoner.
And when the future of both their lives depends on it, Archer and Brooklyn need to answer it once and for all: can broken hearts ever beat the same again?
And can love ever be enough?
Rescued is the first book in the Sanctuary series, but it’s a complete standalone with no cheating or cliffhangers and with a guaranteed happily ever after. This book deals with darker themes of abuse and, while it’s generally sweet, it’s not for everyone. Please, read the content warnings inside the book by using the Look Inside feature or downloading a sample.

“I’m sorry I lashed out,” Archer said, facing the window on the other side of his apartment, Brooklyn behind his back.
“It’s okay,” Brooklyn said, neither stepping inside, nor leaving. “You had a rough day.”
Anger lit up in Archer’s stomach. He didn’t know where it came from. Maybe he didn’t want to be forgiven so easily. Maybe he wanted to be held accountable like he hadn’t felt enough of it already. “Can you just not let it go for once?” he asked, his voice cracking as he tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling. He turned on his heels to face Brooklyn. “Aren’t you ever angry?”
Brooklyn straightened and stepped inside the apartment. In a low, restrained voice, he said, “I’m always angry, Archer.”
“Then shout,” Archer said. “Tell me off. Tell me I’m an asshole for making you get out of the car and smoke on the highway. Tell me I owe you now that you drove me all the way to Albany and back.”
Brooklyn frowned and pouted. “And what good will that do?”
“I don’t know,” Archer said desperately, gesturing harshly with his arms to emphasize just how lost he felt. “It might make you feel better.”
Brooklyn took a step closer to Archer and stared into his eyes. “Is it making you feel better?”
Archer had no answer to that. He was still angry, though he didn’t know why. And who was he angry with? Himself? Bree? Brooklyn? He held back the sob that was building in his chest, chewing on his lower lip and staring at Brooklyn as he waited for something to happen.
Something. Anything. Anything at all just to move on from this dead end he pushed himself into.
“Huh?” Brooklyn asked, letting a bit of that anger seep through in his voice. “Is this making you feel good, Archer?”
When Brooklyn lifted his chin a fraction of an inch, his eyes caught a glint from the sunset that lit the gray clouds far behind Archer’s back. The fire that always burned in Brooklyn’s eyes seemed completely out of control, now. It was furiously glowing, pulsing like a heart, and Archer felt himself getting drawn into it. Drowning in its intensity.
Despite himself, he let his arms race up, like he was tearing himself free of some invisible strings that tied him to the floor. Archer grabbed the lapels of Brooklyn’s jacket and pulled him roughly in, nearly smashing their faces together.
When Archer’s lips pressed against Brooklyn’s, he finally knew what glowing coal tasted like. It tasted manly and ashy, but it had soft edges that Archer wanted to eat up. He wanted to suck Brooklyn’s lips between his and he wanted to push his tongue down Brooklyn’s mouth.
It elevated him. It made him blossom. It made his blood run hotter.
Until Brooklyn pulled back and opened his mouth, breathing deeply like he’d just run a mile. “You’re not feeling alright.”
Archer opened his mouth, adding this to the very top of his list of regrets. He closed his mouth after no sounds came out.
“I’m not doing this,” Brooklyn said. “Not when you’re feeling this way.”
Only in the periphery of his conscious mind did Archer notice how Brooklyn licked his lips gently instead of wiping them with the back of his hand. He also noticed how Brooklyn added a condition to the exclamation that he wasn’t doing this.
