Wane on Harvest Moon by Amanda Meuwissen
Moonlight Prophecies, Book 3
Cat shifter Luke and rat shifter Preston have had a solid relationship for ten years, but lately, the increasing attacks on their pack and the stress of raising their adopted daughter are highlighting more of their differences than the values they have in common. When they travel to Glenwood to investigate the source of the ancient artifacts tied to the recent violence, tensions in the shifter community—and their relationship—are already running high.
Strangely, this mystery seems tied to the events that brought them together. On their first mission, eighteen-year-old Luke and twenty-one-year-old Preston had to put aside their differences—and back-burner their mutual attraction—to prevent a disaster that would have revealed the existence of shifter kind to humans.
But how does what’s happening now connect to their past? And can they find the answers their pack, their species, and their relationship need to survive?

“Oh….” Luke had guessed that might be part of it, but he’d figured Preston just wasn’t ready to come out publicly, not that he was forced to feel that way. “Sorry. Guess I take for granted how much freedom I had at the Shelter. It really is okay, though. Whatever other people think, it doesn’t matter if it’s what you want.”
Luke had had this type of talk with friends, but younger friends. Preston was three years his senior, yet in this, Luke was the experienced one, leading them along. Like how he bent that last bit closer to capture a kiss.
Air huffed between Preston’s lips. Luke held still, merely resting his lips on Preston’s to let him decide their next course.
A lift of Preston’s head connected them firmer, so Luke pressed down to meet him.
A gasp opened Preston’s lips to test with his tongue. Luke opened his mouth to meet that too.
When Preston laughed in his uncertainty, Luke took control, guiding a deeper taste with a boldly exploring tongue, until the tentative rat kissed him back, matching every stroke and tilt of their heads.
Luke could feel himself twitching to hardness, already worked up from teasing Preston—and himself—and not having expected to get this far. Now that he was here, now that he had Preston beneath him, squirming and kissing back with increasing passion, their sloppy, unhurried make-out session was like embers stoked into a bonfire.
Preston smelled like pie and summer and home, and the slide of their tongues was a communion of all three.
Eager for what else might be allowed, Luke pushed a hand up
Preston’s shirt. “Wanna even things up?”
Preston’s eyes glimmered with the stirrings of a Stage One shift.
Win.
Three sharp knocks sounded at the door.
“Preston?” Nell called. “Sorry to wake you, but I have news, and Bash wants everyone to gather downstairs.”
Preston sagged into the mattress with a mesh of disappointment and relief on his face. He wanted to say yes, but he was nervous, uneasy.
Luke got that, but he also knew he could get Preston past it.
“Down in a minute!” Preston called back.
“Um… is Luke in there with you? We can’t find him, but everyone was certain he stayed.”
Preston’s face flared with color.
“Just burning the midnight oil like you, Nell!” Luke answered, which was close enough to making his presence in the room seem innocent. “We’ll be there!”
Nell retreated to knock on the next door, and Luke chuckled before rolling off to lay beside Preston. Both their legs dangled off the bed, one set clothed, the other not, as they stilled their pulses, though Luke would swear he could hear Preston’s hammering.
He caught sight of a pair of onlookers from the edge of Preston’s desk. “Little pervs.” Luke nudged Preston and pointed at Bernard and Bianca. “I think they approve.” He turned his head to look at Preston, waiting for dark eyes to meet his, even if they were a little bashful and unsure yet. “To be continued?”
Preston worried his kiss-bitten lips, but he didn’t say no.
“How about I remain… cautiously optimistic?”
A smile tugged at Preston’s mouth, which Luke counted as another win.
