His husband passed away a while ago, and now he has a thriving medical practice, two busy kids, and one ranch outside Aspen, Colorado that he’s not really sure how to run. Patrick doesn’t want to give up on any part of his life, but he knows he can’t do it all alone, so he turns to a service to hire a cowboy to help run the ranch and free up some of his time
Caleb Warren wants his family ranch back. So he hires on to work as the foreman there through the Cowboy Wanted service, just waiting for the fancy doctor who owns the place to get tired of roughing it and sell out. The problem is, Patrick’s kids love the country life, Patrick is a good man, and Caleb can’t quite get past the guilt he feels about being on the road with the rodeo when his family had some real troubles to deal with.
The two of them find more common ground than they expect, and between everything from animals to parent teacher meetings, Caleb lends and hand and Patrick learns to lean on Caleb for help. Can the two of them give up the past and embrace the future together?
REVIEW:
Wow! Cowboys and kids always get to me 💕
Dr. Patrick Kelly is a renown and gifted orthopedic surgeon that gives his all to put his broken patients back together again. But he has no one to put him back together after his husband Bryan, the love of his life, suddenly dropped dead of a brain aneurysm. And it’s been almost three years of him trying to be everything…dad to his two children (now 10 & 4), successful surgeon and trying to keep Bryan’s hobby farm dream alive. So when he reaches out to Cowboy Wanted LLC he hopes that he can get the help he desperately needs because he can’t keep depending on the kindness of his neighbors. Caleb Warren just wants one thing…his family’s ranch back. After that good-for-nuthin’ swindler he hired to help out at his beloved grandparent’s ranch while he was out on the rodeo circuit took their money and basically left them in squaller. By the time he was alerted to what all was going down he lost the bidding war for the ranch by a mere $5,000 dollars. Now he is going to go make himself useful and ready to grab up the ranch when the city doctor decides it’s all too much. Little did he realize that the Doc and his kids would grab hold of him and never let go.
I understood why Caleb kept his plan to himself at first and that the longer he kept it a secret after he realized it wasn’t what he wanted for Patrick and the kids it was hard to share exactly who he is and why he originally came. He was just lucky that “feelings” were starting to sprout because that could have went sideways real fast.
What I loved most was that Caleb developed an individual and unique relationship with each of the members of the family. With Maggie it was all about her and her growing up a cowgirl. That little spitfire was destine to boss around those huge horses. With Mason it was nurturing and allowing him to explore his love of animals and how to care and protect them. He was going to be a great vet someday. But with Patrick it was all about supporting the man that he first admired but grew to love. He knew that Bryan was his first love and he never wanted to step on the dead man’s toes but he wasn’t Bryan. He was a cowboy that lived by the cowboy way. And winding up with a ready made family wasn’t on his list but quickly became obvious that it was his destiny. He loved Patrick and those kids as his own and they all quickly became his top priority.
This book took me on a rollercoaster ride. I never knew which way it would turn next and I think I was as scared as Caleb, Maggie and Mason were when the came upon Patrick trying to get to his daughter’s birthday. Caleb finally put his foot down and that moment I wanted to cheer out loud. Being a successful surgeon and doing your job is honorable…but not at the expense of your loved ones and the important time with them. I’m sure Bryan tried to get Patrick to understand that but it took the Cowboy to get it across loud and clear! Life is short and you never know what will jump in front of you so make the most of it! And Caleb is just the cowboy to get through his Doc’s thick skull what’s most important.
I am a huge fan of BA and her cowboys. And I love that she has them with family because that’s what makes life special…the love and support of family whether blood family or found family. It’s what makes life worth livin’!
