BLURB:
Cato and Roy have lived in the same dorm all through college. They know each other, but they’re not quite friends. Roy is hard-working and responsible. Cato likes parties, pranks, and skipping class. Now in their junior year, Roy is the dorm RA and is supposed to keep everyone else out of trouble. Half his job seems to be telling Cato to be quiet.
When Cato is faced with a family emergency, Roy is the first to offer to help. And when a social worker is reluctant to assign Cato custody of his minor sister, Roy finds himself claiming to be Cato’s fiancé. It’s a harmless lie, but as the bureaucratic process unfolds, Roy and Cato realize they’ll have to keep up the pretense of being a couple for a while.
Roy thinks they can be convincing. Cato isn’t sure he’s still pretending.
REVIEW:
So to start off, this was a bit of a misleading blurb. It is not enemies to lovers, which is a trope I adore, but more of an aquaintance to friend to lover kind of deal.
Cato is sweet and a little ditzy. He’s got a good heart but is terrible at communication. Roy is kind and always ready to help. Especially Cato. And helping Cato is taking him to crazy places!
The premise of this story is good, but the execution leaves something to be desired. I think the very short chapters made the story feel choppy. I feel like that’s something the editors should have caught.
This story also would have benefitted from a little more length. The beginning feels kind of like the middle. Like we totally missed the “enemies” part of the story. Some anticipation would have done this story some good. There’s some good writing here, but the frequent POV changes were irritating to me.
That all being said, I feel like the characters are very likable. Both men are cute as heck as they dance around each other, pretending they don’t care as much as they do.
Their families are interesting additions to the story and I love how they are not perfect but still pretty awesome.
It’s not a bad story, it’s just lacking in some depth. I think I will go looking for another book by this author and see if I can get a more rounded opinion about their storytelling.
