One starry, starry night, an unexpected romance blossoms between two unlikely souls during a time of Christmas lockdown.

One glacial Friday night in late October 2020, Spencer K Wyrrell—Squirrel—sits hidden behind an evergreen bush, freezing his arse off on a stone bench in the deserted twentieth-floor rooftop garden of his boss’ London flat. Taking a break from volunteering to show social-distanced guests around her penthouse gallery of abstract art, he is waiting with an ice bucket and a bottle of champagne for the arrival of his habitually unpunctual colleague and best friend, Bev. But when the balcony door eventually slides open, the person who steps out is not his friend at all but the smoking hot celebrity and chat show host, Marshall J Highlander. Unsure what to do, Squirrel stays put and overhears Highlander’s private call. A newspaper is threatening to publish nude photographs of him and his ex-boyfriend from a holiday in France.

After more calls are made, an eerie silence descends on the rooftop. When a curious Squirrel peers through the evergreen plant, he notices Highlander has climbed up onto the small wall surrounding the garden, looking out to the River Thames. In a moment of panic, he decides to show himself, because, celebrity or not, everyone is only human and, as his mother had always drummed into him, most problems can be softened with well-chosen words, a little understanding, and a hug tight enough to make your eyes water.

And on that starry, starry night, an unexpected romance blossoms between two unlikely souls during a time of Christmas lockdown.

REVIEW:
Spencer and Marshall meet at a most inopportune moment after it’s clear that Marshall has had a bad evening.  Spencer makes him laugh and Marshall remembers him.  They meet up again when Marshall needs a place to hide out.  And then they are off 🙂  Marshall actually likes Spencer.  And he respects him.  Their romance is a bit push/pull what with their professional lives being so busy.  They have some fits and starts, but it’s clear that they have something.  If only they can find the time to make it work!
I picked up this book after reading his author’s previous Christmas last year which I enjoyed.  This book is completely different to that one, but I very much enjoyed it.  First, the meeting of Spencer and Marshall is truly unique.  I like both MCs very much from the start.  Spencer is such an honest and forthright guy – which probably has led to him being taken advantage of.  His deplorable ex – who I was very happy to see got at least some of his just rewards – was the worst example.  But his boss, said ex’s mother was a total loss.  She’s the kind of person you hope there is a nice warm seat waiting in hell for 🙂  Marshall’s ex would give them both a run for the money though.  There were also wonderful and surprising supporting characters.  Spencer’s bestie Bev, Prince the IT guy, Nile, Prince’s cousin and Darcy, Marshall’s agent/manager/bestie are a few examples of the helpful friends/found family that are there for Spencer and Marshall when things get a bit rough.  Lastly, Spencer’s family were a hoot!  His mum and dad and his brother Garrett and his GF Peony add a lot to the story.  I loved their reactions to everything that happened to Garrett and Spencer 😀  What an awesome family.   The story arc had it’s ups and downs and Spencer continued to doubt himself, but I so enjoyed how he and Marshall were able to finally get past themselves (with a tiny push) and get together.
I love London and really enjoyed the setting of this story.  The author really is great at painting the scene and I felt like I was there on the balconies with the characters.  The interactions between the characters and the locations were so much fun.  I loved the flat above the pizza shop, the coffee shops, the Bangladeshi restaurant, the posh flat, the newspaper office – all of it.  I felt like I was right there.  There is enough drama and angst to keep me reading without getting bogged down.  There is a bit of a slow burn during the first third, but then things take off and I was there for it.  These guys had to work for it and there were some tense moments, but a well-earned HEA made it all worthwhile!  Highly recommended!
