Henry and Hatter are back in this sequel to Mad About the Hatter!
They’ve fallen into a comfortable life together after the events in the first book. But on a day trip to visit the Tweedle Brothers, they happen across a wayward troop of flying monkeys from Oz who need them to help get the troop back home.
In Oz, Hatter reluctantly agrees to accompany Henry on a tour of the land. They soon find out Oz is in serious trouble, with the balance of Good and Evil upset after Dorothy killed the last wicked witch. Henry and Hatter are drawn into a quest to find a new source of Evil for Oz to restore the balance and save Oz – and all the adjacent lands, including Wonderland – from destruction.
REVIEW:
This book was a total delight and brought up so many happy childhood memories of reading the original stories. Henry and Hatter are just lovely and I feel Hatter holds true to the original character without being a copy.
Henry loves Hatter buts feels he needs a break from their routine and off they go to visit the Tweedle Brothers. Instead of tea and chaos with the Tweedle Brothers they find themselves off on another adventure.
The troop of flying monkeys were amazing, so scary and menacing they find themselves transported from Oz into Wonderland and this is the first idea that Henry gets that there is more than Wonderland and other storybook lands are adjacent and accessible. I laughed so much when it turns out that the scary flying monkeys are really children who had wandered too far from home.
The plot was interesting and all the Oz characters you would expect popped up, it was familiar enough to invoke my childhood nostalgia and to allow Henry to figure out where they should go and what they needed to do from the stories he had read.
I loved the development of Henry and Hatter’s relationship and how they both figured out how to give each other what they needed. Hatter’s hat is amazing and I was delighted by him pulling out what ever they needed and then packing it all away again. Huge feasts and tents and all manner of objects safely stored by the magic of his hat. The best bit was the hatter they found who tried so hard and so deviously to get his hands on Hatter’s magical hat.
The plot hinges on what happened after the Wicked Witch was killed by Dorothy and the ramifications of this act, which have been felt across all of Oz and is threatening its existence and if Oz disappears then all the other lands which connect onto Oz will disappear as well. I liked the switch around of going on a quest to find evil rather than good to defeat evil. The evil they found was totally unexpected and a lovely twist in the plot.
All in all a magical feel good book, it was a nice gentle read with an interesting plot and a deepening of Henry’s and Hatters relationship.
