The season of “Best of 2022” book lists is almost upon us. Right now, the Goodreads M/M Romance Group is seeking members’ nominations for their “Members’ Choice Awards.” Other lists are being compiled.
Any author gets a lovely ego-boost from being on those lists, but as we create best-ofs and nominate, I’d like to put in a word for the less-known authors, for first and second books, the people who write something great without the big fan base to promote it. That boost matters even more to folk for whom it’s not a common occurrence.
In the Goodreads group, (which does require membership) books can only be nominated one time in any category. So if your favorite story is already on the nominations list, think about adding a less-known choice. Just being seen in the thread, being on a list in the poll, even if they don’t win, can send curious eyes to check out a new author or unique story.
Authors and books grow with word of mouth, more than any other source of promotion. If you have the time, give the books you love that little added visibility. When the genre stays diverse and wide, with many unique author voices, it remains vibrant and interesting.
I look forward to seeing what everyone has been loving this year.
