BLURB:
When Dariel’s eyes meet Prince Curren’s, he’s immediately caught in the dragon’s fiery gaze. Dariel runs, but he can’t stay away. The temptation is too great. He goes to see the dragon again, and this time, he’s caught for real. The prince takes him back to his castle, to his chambers.
“You’re mine,” he tells Dariel.
Dariel doesn’t want to be a dragon’s fated mate. He doesn’t want anything to do with any paranormal creature. They’re the reason mortals like him went all but extinct. The reason his people have to live in hiding.
Dariel knows if he tried to run back to his community, he would lead the prince right to them. It’s not a risk he can take.
He has to remain by the dragon’s side, share his room… and his bed.
REVIEW:
This is the first book in the series and starts with an interesting idea. What if, when humans find out about paranormals, it’s humans that get wiped out?
Dariel, lives high in the mountains, cut off and hidden from all the paranormal creatures. He lives with a small band of humans, including his best friend and Aunt. He has always been drawn to the city and visits, hunting for food, medicine, and easy money. He thinks that the ceremony being conducted on the death of the Dragon King would be the perfect time to pick a few pockets and get some medicine. The crowd would be distracted and easy pickings for him. He drags his best friend Ben, along with him despite his misgiving’s. His eyes meet Prince Curren and his whole life is about to change.
Prince Curren never thought he’d be King, he was a third son, and ill prepared for what has been thrust upon him. Meeting his fated mate in the crowd of onlookers, is not what he was expecting. He doesn’t hide from the fact he has found his mate but hides what type of species his mate is, as everyone thinks that humans have all become extinct.
I enjoyed the quasi prisoner that Dariel becomes, the ongoing worry he has, that he could lead the Dragon Prince to his family if he runs, fighting the attraction he feels for Curren and the conflict that gives him. The small steps Curren takes to win Dariel over, how he fights his instincts to claim him, as he realises that could destroy any chance he has of Dariel being his mate.
Their romance is set within a backdrop of intrique and mystery, how did the Kind die and what is the mystery illness that Curren’s twin brother has? The trials Curren undertakes to prove himself worthy of the throne, not only show what kind of dragon Curren is, but how much Dariel is starting to care for him. It becomes apparent that there is much more going on then meets the eye. Petty jealousy and revenge rears its ugly head and Dariel’s friend Ben becomes embroiled in the plotting.
Interesting facts emerge as Curren fights to cure his twin brother, that fated mates are more than they seem and could be the answer to all his prayers.
I really enjoyed this book, and the twist of humans being practically extinct and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
