Ozmosis by Dakota Chase
Mad About the Hatter Books, Book 2
Henry and Hatter are back in this sequel to Mad About the Hatter! They’ve fallen into a comfortable life together after the events in the first book. But on a day trip to visit the Tweedle Brothers, they happen across a wayward troop of flying monkeys from Oz who need them to help get the troop back home.
In Oz, Hatter reluctantly agrees to accompany Henry on a tour of the land. They soon find out Oz is in serious trouble, with the balance of Good and Evil upset after Dorothy killed the last wicked witch. Henry and Hatter are drawn into a quest to find a new source of Evil for Oz to restore the balance and save Oz – and all the adjacent lands, including Wonderland – from destruction.

After they were through eating, Hatter rinsed his dishes, then bundled up the tent and its contents, and shoved everything back inside the hat. Usually he was more organized, but daylight, as they said, was burning. Figuratively speaking, of course—he’d never seen daylight actually burn but supposed it would be quite a sight. By the time he was done packing, the coffee had perked him up a bit.
He was happy to see they were closer to the summit of the mountain than they’d thought the night before, and it only took them another hour of hard climbing to reach it. They stood on the peak, clouds drifting around them like ephemeral swaths of cotton candy floss, admiring the view.
Before them stretched an unusual sight. A large rectangle of air, tinged with many colors, seemed to be undulating. The air was like fogged glass—one couldn’t see clearly through to the other side. Hatter realized it was a rainbow dancing before them.
“Is that it, Hatter? Do you think that’s the portal?” There was excitement in Henry’s voice.
Hatter had to admit he felt a surge of excitement himself. “It may be. I’ve never heard of another portal, but I suppose that doesn’t mean there can’t be one.”
“Maybe there are others! Wouldn’t it be fun to journey across Wonderland and find them?” Henry grinned at Hatter.
Hatter thought it would be far more fun to go home, bake some cherry tartlets—of which he was sadly deprived of late—and curl up with Henry and a good book, but he couldn’t bring himself to stick a pin in the balloon of Henry’s enthusiasm. “Oh, um, sure. Fun.” He cleared his throat. “I suppose we should explore this one first, since it’s right here in front of us and there would be very little journeying involved to get to it.”
He approached the wavy air. Looking up, he realized the rectangular anomaly stretched upward as far as he could see. He squatted down, but the odd rectangle met the ground. It also stretched away into the distance to the left and to the right. There seemed to be only one way to test it.
And that was to go through it.
Hatter considered the risks involved. First, he had no way of knowing for sure what lay beyond the undulating rainbow. Second, he could not be sure it was safe for humans to pass through it. What if only flying monkeys could survive it? What if there were terrible things on the other side like hungry Bandersnatches or—gasp—moldy tarts! Oh, the horror!
He had, however, no choice. If he didn’t go through, he knew Henry would barge past him and plunge into the rainbow without hesitation, and if there were something horrible on the other side, Henry would fall victim to it. It was an outcome Hatter simply couldn’t allow. Taking a deep breath and holding it as if preparing to dive underwater, he stepped into the rainbow.

This isn’t his sister’s Wonderland….
Henry never believed his older sister, Alice’s, fantastic tales about the world down the rabbit hole. When he’s whisked away to the bizarre land, his best chance for escape is to ally himself with the person called the Mad Hatter. Hatter—an odd but strangely attractive fellow—just wants to avoid execution. If that means delivering “Boy Alice” to the Queen of Hearts at her Red Castle, Hatter will do what he has to do to stay alive. It doesn’t matter if Henry and Hatter find each other intolerable. They’re stuck with each other.
Along their journey, Henry and Hatter must confront what they’ve always accepted as truth. As dislike grows into tolerance and something like friendship, the young men see the chance for a closer relationship. But Wonderland is a dangerous place, and they first have to get away with their lives.
