REVIEW:
Note: This is the sixth book in this series and builds on the events of the previous books. There are major spoilers for all previous books in this installment and as such, it’s recommended to read/listen to these books in order.
Seth and Evan have dispatched a number of the dark witches who have been murdering the first born of each generation of descendants of the Sheriff’s posse that killed the master witch a century ago. So far they have had surprise on their side. But when they move on the Cleveland to confront the fifth witch, he is ready for them. In a cruel twist of fate, it appears that the next intended sacrifice victim is a Cleveland cop who has Seth and Evan in his sights. They are being set up.
Seth and Evan manage to stay one step ahead of both their pursuers and the cops until they are doing some research at the public library. When Seth misses a check in, Evan goes in search of him and discovers his personal belongings but no Seth. It is evident that Seth is gone – and not of his own accord. In order to save both Seth and the next sacrifice, Evan is going to need some help. There is luckily a local guy, Joe Mack, who can possibly help Evan get Seth back and stop the dark witch.
In the meantime, Seth is kept prisoner and is in a semi-lucid state. His dreams are heartbreaking though. He isn’t sure what is real and what isn’t and he keeps seeing a guy at the edge of his vision that he is drawn to. Who is this guy and why doesn’t his brother Jesse believe him?
Just to make things more confusing, Evan’s brother Parker calls him out of the blue. He wants to see Evan and he’s been in Columbus at university. He’s left their parents behind. Their father is sick though and they are asking for Evan and Parker to come visit. Evan has zero interest in seeing the family that kicked him out. Parker is on the fence, but he really wants to see his brother. Luckily he ends up having some skills that just might come in handy for Evan and the team as they mount a daring rescue plan!
This book is a bit different to the others in this series in that Seth and Evan are physically separated for a good part of the story. Evan really has to step up here as Seth is kidnapped by the bad witch. Luckily he’s got help from Joe and some other folks. Parker is a wild card and Evan is unsure about what he really wants and how he’ll handle what Evan tells him about the magic and the witches and what they are doing. Luckily that goes better than he thinks it will 🙂 This is a bit of a wild ride and there is a lot of suspense as is the norm in this series. I was fully engaged and couldn’t wait to see how the team would pull off this rescue. I can’t wait to see what will happen next and where Parker is going to fall in all this.
Kale Williams does his usual stellar job with this series. By book 6, we are familiar with the main characters and a number of the supporting characters who appear across a couple of other Morgan Brice series. He keeps the energy going with the mystery and suspense, but also provides an emotional gravity to the scenes of Seth and his family that is a little bit heartbreaking. A wonderful performance!
