Erik wished he could see his lover’s expression more clearly. Sometimes, it really sucked being visually impaired. Sure, he could get along just fine. He taught as a CATIS, a Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist, which basically meant he was good at making technology talk. He taught in a centralized location where his clients came to him. But all the money or convenience in the world wouldn’t, couldn’t, make up for his dwindling connection with Trent.
So, lacking visual input, he tried for a word bridge. “I love you.” He refused to quibble. He’d wasted too many years not saying what he really thought.
Trent sighed and Erik heard the frustration in that sound. “I love you too or I wouldn’t have climbed into your closet with you. But I’m claustrophobic.”
“Trent…” He longed to hold his lover. Maybe physical closeness would fix things between them.
“Unless your next words are ‘I’m ready to come out of the closet’ I need to start packing.”
Don’t give up on me. The thought stayed in Erik’s head. Begging wouldn’t change Trent’s mind. But, damn it, didn’t he realize how dangerous it was to be gay? Especially in Texas? Anywhere in the South?
If he didn’t do something now, he’d lose the best thing he’d ever found. “Trent, I…” But he couldn’t quite say it. He struggled for, and discovered, another path. “Will you give me until Sunday?”
“What difference will that make?”
“I’m going to the National Federation of the Blind convention. I’ll be out of your hair for three days. A little distance might help me decide…”
“You can’t even say ‘to come out.’ How can I believe a few more days will change you?”
“I promise,” Erik blurted, “that I’ll seek out other blind gay people and ask how they do it. Please, Trent,” he pleaded when his lover didn’t answer right away.
