Wilde Contract Killing and Fish Training, how can I help you?
Murder contract? Piece of cake.
Find a Jinn? No problem.
New necromancy powers while being followed by an unwanted vampire bodyguard?
Not so much.
Trained to handle even the most fierce undead, Dallas Wilde took out a powerful necromancer without breaking a sweat. Okay, that’s a lie – there was tons of sweat, but he was victorious all the same. Unfortunately, killing a necromancer comes with some repercussions. Broody, annoying, vampire repercussions and new abilities to resurrect the dead.
Can Dallas navigate his blood-sucking bodyguard, new powers, feelings for his attractive client and still handle his contract in time to pay his very, very late rent – all while trying not to get super murdered in the process?
Let’s hope so.
REVIEW:
I loved this book, it was a very different take on Necromancers, Vampires and Succubi. Dallas kills for money, and he is very good at it. He is contracted to kill the evil Necromancer hidden away in the depths of the jungle, the action is fast and furious, and it was classic that he stopped the Vampire bodyguard of the Necromancer by dropping a dinosaur display onto him. He knew he couldn’t kill him, but once the necromancer is dead his enslaved vampire servant would die too.
The job is completed, he gets paid and that’s that, onto the next job or so he thinks. Turns our nothing is what it seems or even what he knew. Sometimes when you kill the evil necromancer there are very real, very unexpected consequences, like the vampire you incapacitated, squashed flat like a bug, turns up and announces that he is now your bodyguard and that the Necromancer’s powers are now yours. Which is What the Hell, Necromancers are evil, Dallas is floored by the revelation and doesn’t know what to do or how to take it.
The relationship between Dallas and Zane is fantastic, they both dislike each other and Dallas has no clue what he needs to do and how to be the master of his vampire bodyguard.
Dallas is a complex character, very funny and irreverent and for ages in the book I thought Kevin was his assistant, turns out he is his fish. The first time Dallas really understands that he has been given the Necromancers powers is an incident that involves Kevin, and I cried buckets, it was so moving.
The book is fast paced and full of twists and turns as Dallas is contracted to track down a Jinn, who was the business partner of Dallas’s client, who he has a friend with benefits type of relationship. I’m still not totally sure if that relationship is going to morph into a more meaningful relationship or if the Enemies to Lovers vibe I got from Dallas and Zane is the relationship that will ultimately flourish. I really appreciated the ambiguity of the romantic relationships as it made the book so much more interesting.
The book is very much an action-packed mystery tracking down the Jinn, with lots of twists, turns, dead ends and eventually a break in the case. I really enjoyed reading it and I am looking forward to the next book in the series to see what happens next. I’m rooting for Dallas and Zane.
