Beau gripped my hand tighter like he was making sure I didn’t let go and began to lead me towards the flashing dance machines. “Do you remember my sister had one of those dance mats? I loved playing on it.”

The memory of the pair of us trying to dance along to some weird, remixed dance songs after school before his sister got back from her tap class swam into my mind. Even back then I’d thought Beau was cute.

“I haven’t been on one for years,” I said, “so don’t laugh at me when I suck.”

“I won’t! Come on. It’s dance-off time.”

It turned out the machines ran off a swipe card that you topped up and used to pay for the games, but it didn’t take us long to get one sorted, then into position on the dance pads. I let Beau choose the song and the difficulty level because I was too busy focusing on the happiness radiating from him.

I’d wanted us to do something fun this evening, and I was glad I’d followed my instincts and picked this instead of something more traditional like the cinema and dinner or a night out.

“Are you ready?” Beau asked, the neon lights making his eyes sparkle like perfectly cut gems.

“Are you?”

“Bring it on.”

He hit the button to start the game and the screen filled with colourful arrows as music blared from the speakers. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing as I felt my body relax for what felt like the first time in months.

I didn’t think I’d been that stressed, but suddenly, I felt like a teenager all over again, hanging out with my first crush and hoping for more without the pressure of bills or trying to make sure my business took off or saving money to move out.

I wasn’t as shit as I’d thought I’d be, but it still frustrated me when arrows slipped through my grasp. It didn’t help that I kept getting distracted by Beau, whose mere existence threatened to send me to my knees and make me beg.

There was just something about him that made me want things I’d never wanted before. Maybe it was because it was Beau—the boy I’d been in love with before I even knew love was a thing—or maybe it was because seeing him like this felt like I was being allowed to see something very few people did.

I got to see Beau as himself—an achingly beautiful soul who shone brighter than the sun.

I didn’t even care that I lost because seeing Beau’s joy and dorky victory dance was a prize nobody else could have.
