Haydn by JJ Harper
Bar 28, Book 5
Haydn
I’ll never find a boyfriend. Who would want me? I’m too shy, too geeky, too ugly. And I carry a truckload of baggage.
A few hookups, some quick groping in the dark, is all I’ve had, but I want more.
A man who takes over the reins every now and then. A man who tells me what to do and takes care of me.
Jonas is the man I’ve dreamt about. Quiet and funny, kind to patrons and staff alike. When his voice turns to steel, all I want to do is drop to my knees before him.
Too bad he’s my boss. No way would he be interested in me. And even if he is, can I trust him with my past?
Jonas
I’ve given up on finding my man. My brothers found their happily ever after, and I’m happy for them. But it’s not in the cards for me. Believe me. I’ve tried. I’ve had boyfriends, but as soon as my instinct to control kicks in, they broke up with me.
One look at Haydn and I know he’s the one for me. A ray of sunshine, bubbling with energy, and so eager to please.
He has secrets he’s not willing to share. I’m a patient man, though. I’ve waited thirty-six years for the perfect man. I can wait until he trusts me and opens up to me.
Haydn is an MM romance featuring hurt/comfort, low angst, instant attraction, a bubbly geeky boy, and a man who likes to be in control. It’s book 5 in the BAR 28 series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. This book is based in the UK and is written in British English.

I jumped off the kerb and opened Jonas’s car door. After six weeks of him taking me to work on the days I started at twelve, I’d become comfortable with him and now had a full-on crush. The guys had been quick to joke about it, saying I got hearts in my eyes whenever I saw him.
“I’m getting used to you being my chauffeur. I miss this when I work the night shifts.”
“I enjoy it too.” Jonas pulled onto the road. “You’ve settled in well, Haydn. All the guys and patrons love you. Have you got a day off soon?”
“Yep, I’ve got tomorrow off. Then I’m working until eleven on Thursday.” Why would he ask that? He knew my rota. In fact, he was the one who had made it.
Jonas was quiet, then let out a long breath. “Would you like to come to my place tomorrow for dinner?”
Now there was a question and a half. Yes, I really wanted to, but how much would he want from me? Was he expecting sex? I wasn’t ready to let him see my scars. Or what if he did and was repulsed?
“Haydn, it’s just dinner. I’m not expecting anything from you. If you don’t feel comfortable at any time, I’ll take you home.”
It was as if he could read my mind. Gah, hopefully not. If he knew the things I fantasised about doing to him, he wouldn’t be able to look me in the eye. “I know. I’d love to come.”
“Wonderful. Is there anything you don’t like to eat?”
I shook my head. “Nope, I’m not a fan of shellfish, but anything else goes.”
“Noted. I can’t promise anything fancy, but I’m not a bad cook.”
I laughed and told him how I cooked for both Kieran and me and that he was moaning that he had to do it himself when I was working. It had become so easy to talk to Jonas. I liked him even more now I’d got to know him. All the bartenders and servers had been nice to me. And our friendships were building. I’d even managed to talk to Leo’s boyfriend without being too starstruck.
When he parked, Jonas looked over to the corner, and his face tightened. I followed his gaze. Max was getting out of his car. He gave us a little wave, then walked inside.
“What’s wrong?” Max hadn’t seemed surprised I sat in his brother’s car. Jonas must have told him he gave me a lift into work sometimes
“Nothing’s wrong.” He switched off the engine. “Walk in with me today, please.”
“Oh, okay.” I wasn’t sure Jonas was telling me everything, but I let it slip. My belly fluttered. I usually went in first. It wasn’t as if anything was going on between us. Yes, we were friends, and I knew he was attracted to me, as I was to him, but nothing had happened. “Am I going to be in trouble?”
Jonas cupped my face in his palm, stroking his thumb over my cheek. I leant into his touch. If only he would kiss me. But that was a dumb idea, way too soon. “No, Haydn. I promise you you’re not in trouble. You tempt me to do so many things. Things we’re not ready for, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to.”
