Hayden
That night with Asher should have been a one off, but something about him draws me in. When he reaches out to me online, I can’t help myself. I want to know more about him, even if we do live in different states. Between soccer and my classes, I don’t have time for much, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. Maybe even friends with benefits. It doesn’t have to mean anything.
Asher
College should have been more accepting than high school but punching the jerk on my soccer team probably wasn’t the best way to make friends. Accidentally liking a picture on Instagram of a guy I slept with once isn’t a great start either. Only the more we talk, the more I wish we didn’t live so far away. This has bad idea written all over it, so why can’t I stop thinking of him?
*Foul Play is a long-distance college sports romance with a HFN ending. Although this is book three of the series, it does standalone. See front matter for TW* (Content Warning This book contains homophobic characters and slurs. One of the main characters is bullied and harassed by a side character.)
REVIEW:
Back to soccer at Blue Mountain University and the boys there.
Hayden is the guy that Aiden asks to buddy up with him when the guy that was bothering him at the frat part doesn’t seem to know what No means. He’s on Ian, Aiden’s twin’s soccer team and was the guy that flirted with Asher, the guy that Ian fooled around with a tiny bit at University of Wyoming at soccer camp the year before. We witnessed what happened that game but now we know the whole story.
Asher has been being tormented and bullied by Abram’s every since Abram called Hayden a fag on the field at the UWY/BMU game and Asher punched him in the nose. Asher and Hayden had caught up after the game and had a night of passion. But is one night of passion enough for these two? And can they develop a friendship/romance with several states separating them?
Although the men had a brief interlude in chapter one the don’t get to actually see each other again until over half way though the book. I appreciated that they may have been a one-night stand but both began to realize there might be more and took it slow developing a long distance friendship. What I really appreciated was Hayden becoming concerned and worrying about Asher and all that Abram and his fellow homophobic team members were subjecting Asher to. Although Hayden wasn’t as financially able as Asher he still took the lead in their relationship and protecting Asher. I know it would have been a hard decision to move away from his mom’s, I applauded Asher taking charge of his situation and making a change seemed the only choice when the University wasn’t cooperating as much as they are suppose to in bullying and homophobic slurring situations. But this Wyoming and I’m wasn’t totally surprised with the outcome of that situation. His education was important to him but UWY wasn’t the place for him.. I did really like Asher’s roommate Ryder. He had Asher’s back when everyone else turned on him.
I liked this book a lot. The texting and not meeting up again went on a bit longer than I liked. I needed more than a long distance phone and sexting relationship but was thankful when the book started moving about half way through. I have really enjoyed this series and look forward to more in the future.
