Dark witches here, bloody witches there, evil witches everywhere.
At home, my life is amazing, thanks to my boyfriend, Cosmo Ono-Nai, and his wonderful family that I’ve become a part of. I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life.
But work is a different story.
All anyone’s talking about is the Red Cloth this, the Red Cloth that. I can’t escape them, and all I really want is to find someplace the witches can’t reach, take my family—my pride—there, and hide them away from the world.
But I can’t. I’ll do everything in my power to protect them, and everyone else, from the building threat. There’s this dread building in my chest about what’s to come, and I have a feeling the Red Cloth is planning something big. I only wish I knew what so I could keep Cos, Jude, and the rest of our family safe.
REVIEW:
I was looking forward to diving back into the Magi world that Michelle has created, and I wasn’t disappointed. The world building and character development is outstanding and every book in the series brings more depth and richness.
I loved the development of Mad and Cos’s relationship from that first flush of attraction to the richer deeper relationship that develops when you live together and really get to find out about your other half. It was especially interesting because Mad was so distrusting and always expecting to be left and so self sufficient holding on to his limited choices intently. The breaking of those barriers and the trust that has been built was truly lovely. Michelle’s in depth examination of their relationship, not the insta-love, everything is rosy in the garden now you’ve found your mate, but the true depth and work they need to put into this relationship that means so much to both of them.
I also enjoyed getting to know more about the pack and their interactions especially the children who were adopted into the pack in the last book. Haiden is your typical teenager, stroppy, angsty, too much of everything going on in his head coupled with the trauma he suffered and the deep responsibility he feels for his younger brother and sister. The way that Mad and Cos navigated what is for every parent a really tricky time in your children’s life, was inspiring. Even though Mad repeatedly says he doesn’t know how to be a parent as he never had any parental involvement in his life in the compound. Magi children are taken away from the woman that carries them and raised in the abusive, frightening atmosphere within the compound. Mads is a natural, caring deeply for the others in the pack and particularly the children. It was a revelation to him that the pack sees him as the Alpha Mate and seek him out for comfort and advice.
Cos comes into his own not only as the caring Alpha of the pack but using his seat of the Council to campaign for rights for Magi, working with Jude which brings the two of them closer and was a joy to see. Michelle hits the right note showing how much time and effort goes into trying to effect change, but it gives me hope that Cos will be successful and improve the life of the Magi.
The action is not very far away with the rifts getting bigger, more monsters coming through and the ever-present threat from the Red Cloth Witches. The twists keep coming, who is the mole? When will they strike next? Who is at risk? The plot is gripping and I can’t wait for the final book in this series.
